Expanded Green Bins Delivering Results

Your actions are cutting waste and carbon

Earlier this year, we made it easier than ever to go green by expanding organics collection across Fennell Campus. Green organics bins were added to the C-Wing Cafeteria, MSA Food Court, hallway bins, and seating areas—making sustainable choices more accessible for everyone.

Thanks to your efforts, we’ve seen a significant increase in organics collected on campus!       

From January to June 2025, we collected 57.09 metric tonnes of organics—up from 36.19 metric tonnes in the same period in 2024.

That’s a 57.7% increase—or 20.9 more metric tonnes of organic waste diverted from landfill!

All collected organics are sent to Davidson Environmental, where they’re transformed into clean energy and nutrient-rich compost. By keeping this waste out of landfill, we’ve helped avoid approximately 5.23 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

That’s like:

• Taking almost 1.5 cars off the road for a whole year
• Planting about 87 trees

What belongs in the green bins?

• Food scraps
• Paper plates and napkins
• Wooden utensils
• Compostable packaging (e.g. pizza boxes, paper take-out containers, compostable plastics*).

*Look for items labeled PLA, BPI Compostable or 100% Compostable.
