“Welcome To Dresden: Jim Crow Lived Here Too"

Anti-Black discrimination was rampant in Dresden Ontario with restaurants and hair salons refusing to serve Black customers. Numerous complaints were filed and Bromley Armstrong and Ruth Lor went to Dresden to run a test case under the recently enacted Fair Accommodations Practices Act; they were denied service when they tried to patronize Kay’s Cafe. The Kay’s Cafe case garnered widespread media attention and ended up in the courts; Kay’s was fined and eventually obeyed the law.
