Carrying Forward Terry Fox’s Legacy
In September, Canadians remember Terry Fox, a 21-year-old who set out on an extraordinary journey in 1980: the Marathon of Hope. After losing his leg to cancer, Terry began running across Canada to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Though his run ended after 143 days and more than 5,000 kilometers, his determination sparked a movement that continues today.
Shared vision and values
The Terry Fox Foundation continues Terry’s mission through a shared vision: bringing Canadians together to realize a world without cancer. This mission is guided by values that reflect Terry’s spirit:
- Integrity – responsible fundraising and transparency.
- Inclusivity – everyone is welcome to be part of the movement.
- Perseverance – never giving up until cancer is defeated.
- Creativity – supporting innovative approaches to research.
- Excellence – funding the best Canadian researchers for maximum impact.
Why cancer awareness matters
- 2 in 5 Canadians are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. (Canadian Cancer Society | Canadian Cancer Society)
- 1 in 4 Canadians is expected to die from the disease Canadian Cancer Society | Canadian Cancer Society
- About 40% of cancers are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices such as not smoking, limiting alcohol, staying active, eating well, and protecting skin from UV exposure.
- Screening programs (Pap tests, mammograms, colonoscopies) save lives by detecting cancer early.
Accessing screening locally
In Ontario, cancer screening clinics are available through family doctors, nurse practitioners, and public health units. Campus and community health services can also provide guidance on eligibility and how to book screenings.
