Cold, Flu, and Infection Prevention Tips

cold and flu season

As we move through the winter months, cold, flu, and other respiratory illnesses are more common. Staying well during this time isn’t just about avoiding illness -  it’s also about supporting our bodies and minds so we can recover faster, stay resilient, and reduce the spread of infection in our community.

Practical steps you can take this season include:

  • Hand hygiene: Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using shared spaces, before eating, and after coughing or sneezing. When handwashing isn’t possible, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Respiratory etiquette: Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue, and dispose of tissues immediately. Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when unwell: If you are experiencing cold or flu symptoms, staying home helps protect colleagues and students and allows your body the rest it needs to recover.
  • Clean shared surfaces: Regularly disinfect frequently touched items such as keyboards, phones, desks, and door handles, particularly in shared workspaces.
  • Support your immune system: Prioritize sleep, stay hydrated, and aim for balanced meals that include protein, fruits, and vegetables to support energy and immune function.
  • Movement and stress management: Gentle movement and stress-reduction practices can help regulate the immune response and reduce fatigue during colder months.
