Welcome to the third week of Cyber Security Awareness Month!
As we continue on our journey to become Cyber Champions, it's time to level up our skills. In today's digital world, online threats are constantly evolving, and so must our knowledge. As scams become more sophisticated, so must our knowledge. We’ll show you how to identify and report deceptive messages, including those made more believable like AI threats, phishing, smishing, and vishing, and how to spot them.
This Week's Focus: Understanding Evolving Threats
Online criminals are always looking for new ways to trick you. By knowing how to recognize their tactics, you can protect yourself and your personal information.
- Phishing This is a common tactic where cybercriminals pretend to be someone they're not (like your bank) to steal your personal or financial information through emails or phone calls. Be on the lookout for suspicious messages.
- Vishing Short for "voice phishing," this technique uses voice calls to trick you into giving away sensitive information.
- Smishing A type of phishing that uses fraudulent SMS or text messages to deceive you. You can report these scams by forwarding the message to 7726 (SPAM).
- AI and Sophisticated Threats As AI becomes more advanced, so do cyber threats. Criminals are now using AI to create convincing fake messages, deepfake voice calls, and realistic fake videos, making it harder than ever to tell what's real.
Stay Ahead of the Threat
Knowledge is your best defense. The more you know about these evolving threats, the better you can protect yourself and those around you.
Remember, you have the power to stay ahead of these tactics. If you're ever in doubt, trust your gut. Don't click on suspicious links, don't give away personal information over the phone, and always verify a message's source.
