Daughter of Faculty Member Represents Canada at the Olympics
How did you spend your summer vacation?
For one faculty member it was a summer to remember. Julie Scheffel, a Professor and Academic Coordinator in the Child and Youth Care program, attended the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France. Her daughter Claire competed for Canada in Artistic Swimming.
“Watching Claire and her teammates walk out onto the stage and swim their routines took our breath away,” says Julie. “Seeing her enjoy participating in [the] Opening and Closing Ceremonies was also amazing! We were so proud of her getting to have this incredible experience after all of her hard work, sacrifice, and dedication.”
Outside of sitting in the stands to cheer on Claire and her teammates, Julie enjoyed seeing the city dressed up for the occasion. “We haven't been before so seeing not only the Eiffel Tower lit up at night but also with the Olympic rings on it [and] the Louvre with the rings out front was amazing.” Other highlights of the trip were seeing the Olympic cauldron and walking along the Seine to see where Claire and her team had floated down on the boat during the Opening Ceremonies.
Being part of the Olympic family of supporters had its perks as Julie shares, “Canada House was perfect!” It was where the artistic swimming families spent time together and they were able to meet many other athletes as well.
