For going above and beyond to make sure her courses are engaging and fun for students, Monica Almas is a Mohawk College Everyday Hero. A faculty member in the college’s Health Studies department, Monica works hard to ensure class material is as engaging as possible and to develop ways for course content to be delivered that is fun and easy to understand, through real world applications and examples. Knowing the demands of virtual education Monica has made sure to include mindfulness activities and Fun Music Tuesdays at the beginning of classes to reduce zoom fatigue. She also makes sure her classroom is inclusive and accessible, working to ensure each student feels comfortable in their own identity and delivering course material in a variety of formats so every student can succeed. She also does frequent check-ins with students to make sure they are not struggling.

For always going out of her way to support her students, Christine Sager is a Mohawk College Everyday Hero. A professor in Mohawk’s Social Service Worker program, Christine is always there to support and guide her students. Last Christmas, at the height of the global pandemic, Christine took time out of her Christmas day to host a Zoom call for students who were away from family or who were self-isolating. She done similar things to support students throughout the year such as holding extra Zoom calls to make sure students fully understand assignments. These examples show the amount of sympathy, compassion and effort Christine puts forth for all of her students.
