"Exercise Snacks"

Have you heard of “Exercise Snacks”?

If you spend long hours at a desk, it’s easy for the day to slip by without stretching or moving. Exercise snacks are short bursts of movement designed to break up sitting time and keep your body energized. They’re especially fitting for March wellness observances like National Nutrition Month and World Obesity Day (March 4), which highlight overall wellness.

Exercise snacks are brief bouts of physical activity, usually lasting 1–5 minutes, that interrupt long periods of sitting and gently engage your muscles and circulation. Unlike scheduled workouts, they’re easy to do at your desk, in a home office, or even during short breaks between meetings — no special equipment needed.

Studies have shown that brief bursts of activity that engage large muscle groups, such as the legs, can help improve metabolic markers and cardiorespiratory fitness when performed consistently — even if the total movement time is small. For example, one study found that three short stair‑climbing bouts of about 20 seconds each, spaced throughout the day, improved fitness in previously sedentary adults.

Here are some practical exercise snacks you can try at work or at home: Office Exercises: 30 Exercises to Do at Your Desk

  • Chair Sit-to-Stands – Stand fully from your chair and sit back down slowly. 10–15 reps
  • Desk Push-Ups – Place your hands on a sturdy desk and perform incline push-ups. 8–12 reps
  • Calf Raises – Stand and lift your heels up and down. 15–20 reps
  • Standing Knee Lifts – Lift one knee toward your chest, alternating legs. 8–10 per leg
  • Short Walks – Take a 1–2 minute brisk walk-  indoors or outside, to visit a colleague at their desk, to the washroom or water cooler, or even walking your dog , every bit counts!”

Friendly Reminders

  • If you have medical conditions, injuries, or mobility concerns, check with your physician before starting new activities.
  • Stop any movement that causes pain or discomfort.
  • Exercise snacks complement regular physical activity — they aren’t a replacement but make movement more accessible on busy workdays.

Tiny, frequent bursts of movement can add up to meaningful benefits. This March, consider giving your day a little boost — one “snack” at a time!
