Fire Prevention: Cooking Fires

Cooking is the leading cause of reported home fires. Cooking fires can start in seconds and quickly spread, causing serious injuries, property damage, or even loss of life. To help prevent a cooking fire follow these tips:

  • Never leave cooking unattended
  • keep flammable items away from heat sources
  • and make sure smoke alarms are working.

If a small grease fire starts, turn off the heat and carefully cover the pan with a lid—never use water on a grease fire. When in doubt, get out and call emergency services.
