Giving Items a Second Life: Sustainable Move Out at Mohawk
Since 2021, the Sustainability Office has partnered with the Mohawk College Residence to help students dispose of unwanted items after move-out in a more sustainable way.
This year, from April 10-20, students dropped off items in the bins located in the Residence’s main lobby during the peak of move-out season.
Items included clothing and textiles, electronic waste and batteries, unopened non-perishable food items, housewares, and school supplies.
On April 20, the Sustainability Office and Green Team volunteers worked together to sort and organize the collected bags in appropriate categories.
All items were then weighed and dropped off at local organizations.
Together, a total of 682 lbs of items was collected during move-out and successfully diverted from landfills, including:
- 504 lbs of clothing and housewares donated to a local charity
- 60 lbs of e-waste and batteries recycled
- 53 lbs of school supplies donated to departments at Mohawk College
- 19 lbs of books donated to Mohawk Library and Multi-Faith Prayer Room
- 46 lbs of non-perishable food donated to Neighbour 2 Neighbour
This initiative shows how collaboration and small actions can create meaningful environmental and community impact.
