Massage Therapy Teaching Clinic at Fennell Campus now open
The Allied Health department is excited to announce the re-opening of our Massage Therapy teaching clinic at the Fennell campus in room R101 of the David Braley Athletic & Recreation Center (DBARC)! Students, employees, and members of the public are invited to book massage treatments with our Semester 3 and 4 students.
As part of the requirements to graduate and become eligible to write the provincial certification exams with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario, students must complete a total of 330 hours of supervised direct massage therapy to the public. By coming in for a massage, you’re helping our students earn their hours and prepare for their regulatory exams.
Since the pandemic, R101 has been closed to the public with students completing their clinical training off campus at St. Elizabeth’s Village (SEV) and through outreach in the community. Re-opening R101 provides students the opportunity to develop their client assessment and treatment skills working with a diverse range of clients on campus and from the surrounding community.
According to Clinical Coordinator, Vivian Armas, the re-opening of R101 has had a tremendous impact on the program. “Students are getting more opportunities to appreciate the impact massage therapy has on people’s health and wellbeing. The positive response from clients is helping them build confidence in their skills. They are even actively participating in marketing and recruitment of clientele,” she says. “Having a clinic on campus has also improved the program’s visibility, leading to a major increase in interest in our program”.
Program Manager, Graeme Douglas, has been working with the Massage Therapy team to support the re-opening of R101, which has included updating signage, advertising, and staffing of technologists who support clinical training. Keep an eye out for more signage and marketing material popping up around campus!
The teaching clinic at SEV continues to operate and will also support more complex care, particularly with clients from the active aging community and various specialty populations.
To ensure that students achieve 330 hours of direct client care, the program has launched new initiatives including free massage coupons and a massage stamp card. For every four massages, clients will get a fifth massage free.
The cost of a massage at the Fennell Campus (R101) or St. Elizabeth's Village is:
- $39.55 – General Public
- $16.95 – Mohawk Students or SEV Resident
The massage treatments on campus offer relaxation and treatment of minor musculoskeletal issues to clients while providing students an opportunity to practice their hands-on skills and knowledge of anatomy and physiology. We encourage students, faculty and staff, and members of the public to visit the Fennell campus in R101 to enjoy a massage!
