Mohawk Advertising students dominate in national competition

Three teams of Mohawk College Advertising students were asked to help RW&CO tell the world that going green is always in fashion. In the end, they told the industry that they are among the best in their fields.

Mohawk teams earned gold, bronze and merit honours in the Fall 2021 National Advertising Challenge, open to all students enrolled in an advertising, design or marketing course at any Canadian college or university. The near sweep of the honours this year reflects a high level of skills among the students and the staff and curriculum of the Advertising program at Mohawk.

“The brief was to find a way for RW+Co. to prove it is working towards more sustainable practices,” explains professor Jef Petrossi. The students, teamed in pairs, had a blank sheet to work with, allowing them to pursue the challenge in very different creative ways.

The winning teams are:

Gold: Ethan Andrews and Jared Mason (3rd year)

“Jared and Ethan researched and found out that the moth population is actually vital for our environment, so they arrived at an idea for RW+Co to create a moth-friendly fashion line,” explains Rafael Ferreira, who mentored the students, along with Petrossi. “Nick and Emily created an app that sorts through your photo reel and rewards you for wearing the same clothes more frequently. Dawson and Logan designed recycled sweaters that celebrate our national parks.”

Gold award winners receive a paid internship at one of Toronto’s top agencies. However, in this case, Andrews and Mason, also won the contest two years ago, when in their first year. They did an internship at that time and are now both working for FCB (Foote, Cone & Belding) is a global, award-winning and integrated marketing communications company.

Congratulations to all the students involved. Mohawk College was very well represented.
