Mohawk basketball teams medal at OCAA Championships; men qualify for Nationals
For the first time in a decade, both the Mohawk Mountaineers men’s and women’s basketball teams earned medals at the OCAA Championships in the same season.
The men’s team advanced to the OCAA gold medal game but fell 80-67 to the Humber Hawks, earning silver. Despite the loss, the Mountaineers secured a berth at the CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship in Nanaimo, B.C.
Mohawk reached the conference final with an 82-80 semi-final victory over the host St. Clair Saints. Jerry Jr. Mercury and Marko Dosen were both named OCAA Championship All-Stars for their performances over the two games.
On the women’s side, the Mountaineers captured bronze to earn the program’s 25th all-time OCAA medal. Mohawk is tied for second all-time in medals among OCAA women’s basketball programs.
The Mountaineers were relegated to the bronze medal game after a narrow 52-50 semi-final loss to the eventual champion Fanshawe Falcons. Mohawk bounced back with a 106-64 victory over the Loyalist Lancers to secure bronze.
Mountaineers forward Kendra Oliver was named an OCAA Championship All-Star.
The men will now turn their attention to the CCAA championship, which begins March 18. Mohawk will face the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference champion Keyano Huskies in a quarter-final matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 pm ET.
