Mohawk College joins Academics Without Borders – Consider getting involved

academics without borders

Administered through Mohawk International, Mohawk College became a Member of Academics Without Borders (AWB) in the Summer of 2023 and is inviting faculty and staff to consider getting involved.

AWB is a Canadian non-profit organization that facilitates capacity-building projects in partnership with post-secondary institutions in emerging and developing economies. Since 2009, AWB projects have been mainly in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, but are expanding to South America, Central Asia, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe.

AWB’s community of academic institutions, faculty and staff are committed to supporting the global development of the higher education sector in a sustainable and holistic manner. By responding to specific requests from partner institutions, AWB’s demand-driven projects reflect local needs, priorities and capacities, making them relevant, impactful and sustainable.

“Mohawk College has renewed its commitment to comprehensive internationalization and a partnership with AWB places the college among the leaders in the sector who are embracing and supporting this holistic approach to international education,” said Thea Laidman Mohawk College’s Associate Vice President, International. “Through this collaboration with AWB, we will work to build capacity to advance higher education in emerging economies and provide a global perspective to faculty and staff that will help to enrich teaching practices and research within our campus community, while meeting the college’s commitment to the UN SDGs.”

How you can get involved

AWB’s fundamental operating principle is that global partners identify the areas in which assistance is needed. They will take the lead in project design and implementation. Mohawk College, with the support of International and Partnerships, will provide the expert volunteers necessary for these projects. After the volunteers have completed their assignments, it is the responsibility of the partner institutions, themselves, to sustain the projects’ activities.

We invite Mohawk College faculty and staff to review AWB’s current proposals. If you are interested in learning more or submitting a proposal, please contact Sandra Gruosso, Manager, International Partnerships and Programs, at Mohawk International: sandra.gruosso@mohawkcollege.ca
