Mohawk College’s Joyce Centre Recognized with Zero Carbon Recertification
Now in its eighth year of operation, the Centre generated a fraction of the emissions compared to buildings of a similar size in the past year
The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation has once again earned Zero Carbon Building - Performance certification from the Canada Green Building Council. The recertification confirms that the building continues to operate as designed, using geothermal energy, rooftop solar panels, efficient design and an all-electric system to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.
More importantly, the Joyce Centre continues to serve as a living laboratory for learning. Through class tours and campus events, students, employees and community visitors can see climate action in practice and learn how low-carbon buildings support a more sustainable future.
The building recently served as a venue for the 2026 PIVOT Conference, bringing together industry and sustainability professionals, educators and students to explore climate solutions and resilience.
As Mohawk College advances its Climate Action Plan, the Joyce Centre remains an important demonstrative site, helping students and visitors make concrete connections to sustainability initiatives across campus. While the Joyce Centre was purpose-built as a high-performance building, the college's greatest opportunity for reducing emissions lies in modernizing its existing campus infrastructure, work that is already well underway.
The ongoing success of the Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation is the direct result of the expertise, dedication, and day-to-day efforts of the college's Facility Services Operations team. Their work ensures the building continues to operate at peak efficiency year after year.
