Mohawk Employee Wins Ontario College Counselling Practice Award
Congratulations to Mohawk College Counsellor Don Jamieson. Don recently received the 2024 Ontario College Counsellors (OCC) Award of Excellence for Counselling Practice!
The award honours counsellors who demonstrate excellence and innovation in the provision of counselling services, and who have significantly contributed to student success at their college.
In his role at Mohawk, Don has developed and facilitated the Dungeons and Dragons Social anxiety group, “Slaying Social Anxiety” as well as the peer-to-peer stream of the program, “Wellness & Dragons.” These groups provide students a positive space to challenge social anxiety in a low-pressure environment that cultivates a sense of belonging.
Don has also developed and facilitated evidence-based psycho-educational workshops for students including: “Sleep: Get it, Keep it, Fix it,” “Memory Skills,” and “Building a Routine.”
According to Don’s colleagues in the Health and Wellness Centre, “Humor, passion, dedication, and approachability are the hallmarks of Don’s practice. His warmth and sincerity create an atmosphere where students feel comfortable expressing themselves openly and honestly. Whether through a witty anecdote or a heartfelt conversation, Don leaves a lasting impression on everyone he encounters.”
