Mountaineers Varsity Highlights - September 19
First home games of the 2025-26 varsity season
The Mohawk Mountaineers hosted their first home games of the 2025-26 varsity season this past weekend.
Women’s soccer had a strong showing, defeating the Redeemer Royals 1-0 at home before earning a 3-3 draw on the road against the Fanshawe Falcons. First-year Madison Rodriguez (Mechanical Techniques – Welding & Fabrication) scored the lone goal against Redeemer with a strike from 30 yards out. The Mountaineers now sit at 2-0-1 on the season.
On the men’s side, Mohawk earned two draws. The Mountaineers tied Redeemer 1-1 at home thanks to a 90th-minute goal from Ignacio Torres (Insurance). They also drew 1-1 on the road with Fanshawe, with Blake Ellis (Computer Software Technology) scoring the equalizer.
It was a difficult weekend for Mohawk women’s softball, which dropped two games each against the Humber Hawks and St. Clair Saints.
The men’s lacrosse sixes team began their 2025 season with a road contest versus the McMaster Marauders. Mohawk came out on top 28-23.
Mountaineers Athletes of the Week
Madison Rodriguez – Women’s Soccer
Rodriguez was the hero in Mohawk's 1-0 victory over the Redeemer Royals on Friday night. In the Mountaineers' home opener, she delivered a stunning free kick from 32 yards out that slipped just under the crossbar and out of reach of the Royals' goalkeeper. The strike marked Rodriguez's first career goal in the OCAA. She followed it up with an assist in Mohawk's 3-3 draw against the Fanshawe Falcons on Sunday.
Rodriguez was also named an OCAA Athlete of the Week.
Emidio Refosco – Men’s Soccer
Refosco showcased his quickness and ball handles in a 1-1 draw versus the Redeemer Royals. Playing on the outside, Refosco created multiple scoring chances, leading to two shots on goal. The second-year assisted on Mohawk's lone goal. Refosco provided similar feed and helped create offensive chances on Sunday versus the Fanshawe Falcons.
