Mountaineers varsity highlights – February 10, 2023

The banner season is in full effect, with conference playoffs just around the season.

The first OCAA Championship tournament began prior to the publication of this recap, with Mohawk Mountaineers men’s and mixed doubles curling participating in the provincial championship in Welland.

The Mountaineers still have three games remaining in the season before playoffs begin and they hold the top spot in the OCAA West division, at 13-2.

With two games remaining, the Mountaineers women’s basketball team also clinched a playoff spot this past week, after winning 46-42 over the Sheridan Bruins.

Both women’s and men’s volleyball teams picked up crucial victories over the Niagara Knights and have been locked into a playoff spot for quite some time. However, they will continue to fight for a possible home playoff game heading into the final weekend of regular season play.

Mountaineers Athletes of the Week

(in partnership with the Mohawk Students’ Association)

Rachel Guanzon (women’s basketball)

Guanzon (Guelph, ON) receives the honours after a career game last Saturday versus the Lambton Lions. The third-year guard scored 30-points – a personal best – on eight-of-13 from beyond the arc, and added three rebounds and three steals to her statistics. Guanzon becomes the first Mountaineer to hit the 30-point milestone in a single-game since Sam Pocrnic did so on January 10, 2020.

Also honoured as OCAA Star of the Week, Sloots (Hamilton, ON) and men's volleyball won two matches this week and have now won three consecutive. In the two matches, Sloots had a combined 16 kills on a 41.4 kill percentage. The second-year outside hitter added two service aces, five digs and three blocks.
