Mountaineers varsity highlights– October 11, 2024

W- Mohawk Soccer037

The first month of the 2024-25 varsity season was eventful for the Mohawk Mountaineers.

Led by the cross country program, Mohawk has shown lots of early success. The women’s cross-country team currently ranks No. 3 nationally after two first place finishes at OCAA invitational events, while the men’s team is ranked No. 5 nationally following two second place finishes.

The Mountaineers women’s soccer team is competing in a very competitive OCAA West Division, and currently host the fourth seed. Currently, in position to host a playoff game with a 4-4-1 record, Mohawk has one game remaining on their schedule.

Janelle Lammers, of the women’s soccer team, was recently named a CCAA Athlete of the Week for her play during the week of Sept. 22-28. Lammers currently leads the OCAA with seven assists.

Men’s soccer has also earned their spot into the OCAA playoffs with one game remaining. They hope to end the season on a good note with a final match versus Redeemer before the postseason.

There will be no 2024 playoffs for the Mohawk softball team after a 7-17 season, but they ended their year on a positive note, scoring 21 runs in a win versus the Lambton Lions. It was the most runs the softball program has scored in a single-game since September 29, 1995.

History was made on Oct. 8 when the Mountaineers men’s lacrosse sixes team won their first game in program history. The team debuted two weeks prior, losing their first two games, but made impressive strides to defeat the McMaster Marauders 21-14.

The Mountaineers basketball and volleyball programs are wrapping up preseason play as they will begin their 2024-25 season on Oct. 19.

Mountaineers Athletes of the Week

Kayla Makowich – Women’s Softball

It was an outstanding offensive week for Makowich, who in the final week of the 2024 campaign set a new Mountaineers record for runs scored in a single-season with 25, surpassing her own record of 24 from the previous year. During a six-game week, the second-year batted .556, ranking up 10 hits, 10 runs scored, four RBIs and four walks. She also hit her first career home run in a game agaist the Lambton Lions, where Mohawk scored 21 runs – the most a single-game for the program since September 29, 1995. In that same game, Makowich nearly hit for the cycle, coming up just a double short of the achievement.

Ben Temple – Men’s Soccer

In his second season with the Mountaineers, Temple received his first career start this past week versus the No. 1 nationally ranked Humber Hawks. From the beginning of the match, the second-year showed no fear and was composed giving his teammates early energy to match the Hawks. Despite surrendering four goals, all of which came in the final 15 minutes of the match, Temple made 10 saves to keep his team competitive for a majority of the contest.
