Pilot program assists newcomers looking to enter skilled trades.
On Saturday December 2, 2023, Mohawk College welcomed 11 newcomers to the Stoney Creek Campus for Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship to participate in a pilot program focused on Welding specific skills assessments. All of the participants who attended have been in Canada between 8 months and 5 years, and are actively seeking employment in the skilled trades. The assessments they receive can be provided to employers to demonstrate entry level skills within the Welding trade. All participants were recruited through local settlement agencies and provided important wrap around supports with things like transportation to and from skills assessments, translator support, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
This pilot program was delivered through Mohawk College in partnership with NGen, an industry-led, non-profit organization leading Canada’s Global Innovation Cluster for Advanced Manufacturing, and Tech-Access Canada, a national, not-for-profit organization passionate about expanding and contributing to the development of a more inclusive innovation economy. Mohawk’s Marshall School for Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship and Center for Professional Advancement (CPA) worked in partnership to develop the specific skills assessments and support individuals with their ability to demonstrate key competencies for employers.
