Practice Sun Safety

Summer is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine, but it is important to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Whether you are heading to the beach, working outdoors or relaxing in the backyard, these simple sun safety practices can help keep your skin and eyes protected.
- Use the Right Sunscreen: Opt for a broad-spectrum, water-resistant lotion or cream (avoid aerosol sprays if possible for even coverage) with an SPF of at least 30. Apply about one ounce (a shot glass full) to cover all exposed skin.
- Reapply Frequently: Sunscreen rubs, sweats, or washes off. Reapply every two hours, and even more frequently if you are swimming or sweating.
- Cover Up: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, and tightly woven clothing. For maximum protection, check for clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) rating.
- Protect Your Eyes: Ultraviolet radiation can cause eye damage. Wear close-fitting, wraparound sunglasses that block 100% of both UVA and UVB rays.
- Seek Shade: Avoid direct sunlight during the peak UV hours. Look for natural shade under trees or set up a canopy or umbrella. Keep in mind that UV rays can still reflect off surfaces like sand, water, and concrete.
