Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls

winter day on a snowy path full of people

Winter in Ontario brings snow, ice, and freezing temperatures, increasing the risk of workplace injuries. Everyone should take precautions to stay safe, whether walking between buildings, commuting, or working outdoors.

Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls

Slips and falls are one of the most common winter injuries. Even a small patch of ice can lead to sprains, fractures, or head injuries.

To reduce your risk:

  • Wear footwear with good traction and slip-resistant soles.
  • Take small, deliberate steps, and keep your hands free for balance.
  • Stick to designated walkways and avoid shortcuts across untreated areas.
  • Watch for wet floors when entering buildings.
  • Report icy or hazardous conditions so they can be addressed quickly.

Following these precautions helps protect yourself and your colleagues. For guidance, see resources from CCOHS: Prevention of Slips, Trips and Falls

Recognizing Cold Stress

Cold stress can lead to frostbite or hypothermia, particularly for those working outdoors. Be alert for:

  • Numbness or tingling in fingers, toes, or face
  • Shivering, fatigue, or confusion
  • Pale or hardened skin

To prevent cold stress:

  • Dress in layers and cover extremities.
  • Keep clothing dry and take breaks in warm areas.
  • Monitor weather conditions and plan outdoor work accordingly.

Reporting Injuries and Incidents

Timely reporting ensures employees receive support and allows hazards to be addressed. All injuries, incidents, near misses, or unsafe conditions should be reported through OHS Mohawk

When in doubt, submit a report or contact the Health, Safety and Wellness team at OHSMohawk@mohawkcollege.ca. Reporting helps prevent future incidents and maintains a safe campus environment.

Working together, we can stay safe this winter.
