Recognizing Global Accessibility Awareness Day
Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) is observed on the third Thursday in May each year to highlight the importance of creating digital spaces that are accessible and inclusive for everyone, including people with disabilities. The day encourages greater awareness of how individuals interact with technology and the barriers that can exist in websites, online learning, communication tools, and digital content.
As technology continues to play an important role in education and the workplace, accessibility helps ensure that all members of our community can fully participate and engage. Small actions such as using clear formatting, adding captions or alternative text, and considering accessibility in digital design can help create more inclusive experiences for students, employees, and the broader community.
GAAD also serves as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of equity, inclusion, and belonging in both physical and digital environments. Creating inclusive communities includes supporting overall wellbeing and ensuring individuals can access resources when needed. Mohawk employees and their immediate family members can access confidential wellness and mental health supports through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provided by Homewood Health.
