Research faculty from Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography Program win prestigious award at international conference
A research team from Mohawk College recently won international recognition at the 35th Annual American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) Scientific Sessions in Portland, Oregon.
Research authors Professor Babitha Thampinathan, Instructor Jacqueline Wheatley, and Program Coordinator Jennifer Burton, of the Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography program, presented the team’s research at the conference in mid-June, winning the 2024 Brian Haluska Sonographer Research Award Competition. Yale University won the competition in 2023 and other past winners have included the Mayo Clinic, Children’s Hospital Colorado, University of Wisconsin, and other esteemed institutions.
The ASE conference is an internationally recognized gathering for physicians, cardiac sonographers, and other healthcare professionals who work in diagnostic cardiac ultrasound (or “echocardiography”). As part of the session, the four finalists in the competition presented their research with the winner being selected by a panel of echocardiography experts.
The team’s research abstract submitted for the competition was entitled “Effectiveness of Simulation-Based Transthoracic Echocardiography Training on Cardiac Sonography Students’ Learning.” To conduct the research, a simulation-based training lab was introduced into the traditional Anatomy and Echocardiography course and the researchers measured the effect of our student’s comprehension of anatomy seen on ultrasound.
