School of Climate Action acknowledged by international conference
In April, Mohawk College travelled to The Sustainable City Dubai to participate in the second annual SEE Global Sustainability Summit and formally acknowledge the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed with the SEE Institute in July 2024.
The focus of the 2025 Summit was Sustainability Education, Youth and Innovation looking to engage the next generation in innovating for the future. The event included a Guest of Honour presentation by President Paul Armstrong on the opening day, along with a participation in the concurrent sessions in support of a research paper submitted by the School of Climate Action. The Summit provided a platform for academics, researchers, and industry experts from around the world with an opportunity to engage in discussions and dialogue about sustainability, net-zero initiatives, and circular economy solutions, along with strategies for building resilient cities and communities.
As Guest of Honour, President Armstrong addressed attendees bringing a global perspective to the summit. Through his comments he highlighted how youth empowerment, through higher education, is impacting climate action goals.
We know that young people around the world are ready to lead and to be change-makers. Our job is to equip them, support them, and believe in them.
President Armstrong’s speech was well received with many attendees approaching him afterwards to learn more about the efforts undertaken by Mohawk College and to acknowledge the institution’s impact as leaders in sustainability.
In addition, a research paper entitled Fostering Sustainability and Innovation in Education: An overview of the foundational pillars of the School of Climate Action at Mohawk College received second prize for Best Research Paper in the Academic Category. Prepared by Amanda Smits, Associate Dean and Lorraine McKellar, Senior Manager, Administration and Learner Experience from the School of Climate Action, the paper built on President Armstrong’s presentation focusing on the critical role higher education plays in leading global solutions for climate action. The paper explored the development of the new School of Climate Action, including the formation of evidence-based foundational pillars as a demonstration of the college’s overall strategic vision.
The Summit was a great opportunity to engage in discussion and explore innovative strategies, technologies, and policies aimed at fostering sustainable and resilient development, while charting a path towards creating inclusive, equitable, and thriving communities.
