Seed To Shelf: Mohawk College’s Deaf Empowerment Program backpacking with a purpose

25_02_21_SanJuan_Guatemala_City-27

This trip was organized by Mohawk's International team as part of Mohawk College’s Global Learning Opportunities (GLO) program and Global Skills Opportunities (GSO), a Government of Canada initiative that was aimed at empowering post-secondary institutions to increase the participation of young Canadians in international learning opportunities.

Students and faculty from the Deaf empowerment program travelled to Guatemala in February, to build leadership skills while learning from Indigenous families, community activists and farmers and experiencing the unique culture and beauty of Guatemala. The group participated in leadership training sessions led by the Deaf Empowerment Program faculty members, cultural activities by local educators and activists, and visited a school in a rural community where they engaged with other students. This trip was facilitated by bilingual guides and supported by American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters.

This study abroad program was an enriching and an empowering experience for all participants with a focus on building future DEP/Mohawk College educators, community advocates, and leaders within the Mohawk College and Hamilton community. Students have shared how this was a life-changing experience.
