Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK) visits Mohawk’s Fennell Campus
On July 23, a representative from Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK) met with the college’s School of Climate Action, Sustainability Office, Centre for Indigenous Relations, Knowledge and Learning’s (CIRKL) and the Mohawk Students’ Association (MSA) to discuss sustainability in action.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Mohawk College became the first North American educational institution to be awarded Responsible Futures Accreditation by SOS-UK. The purpose of this visit was to reflect on the college’s sustainability audit findings and explore how the strong collaboration between the college, the MSA and Mohawk students can help propel the institution forward within the Responsible Futures framework.
Sonya Peres, Senior Project Manager—Education (Programmes) from Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK), spent the morning exploring opportunities for deeper student engagement in sustainability. The afternoon of her visit included a discussion of the college’s Responsible Futures 2024-25 sustainable plan and next steps to maintain our accreditation.
President Armstrong also met with Sonya, Mohawk College student Olivia Mottley, Allison Maxted (Manager, Sustainability Office), and Nair Lacruz (Associate Dean, School of Climate Action) to discuss the college’s recent accreditation and future sustainability opportunities.
To conclude her visit, Sonya toured the campus and explored sustainability-focused features such as the newly planted bioswale, designed to enhance stormwater management, and the community garden, which promotes local food production and student engagement.
