Supporting a Co-Worker Through Grief

flowers

The loss of a loved one is a deeply personal experience, and returning to work afterward can look different for everyone. Some employees may find comfort in reconnecting with their workplace routine, while others may need additional time and flexibility as they navigate their grief.

Creating a supportive workplace starts with compassion, understanding, and respect for each person’s experience.

How You Can Support a Coworker

Small gestures can have a meaningful impact:

  • Acknowledge their loss. A simple message such as “I’m thinking of you” or “I’m glad you’re back” can help someone feel supported.
  • Respect individual needs. Everyone grieves differently. Some people may want to talk about their loss, while others may prefer privacy.
  • Be patient and understanding. Grief can affect concentration, energy levels, and emotions. Offering flexibility and kindness can help during the transition back to work.
  • Continue including them. Invite them into conversations and workplace activities while allowing them space when needed.

Creating a Compassionate Workplace

We all play a role in creating a workplace where employees feel supported during difficult times. A little kindness, empathy, and understanding can make a significant difference for someone returning after a loss.
