A longtime leadership professor at New York University, she now teaches with the University of Oxford’s Initiative for Global Ethics and Human Rights. Named a recipient of Oprah’s “Chutzpah Award”, Irshad is also a Globe and Mail #1 bestselling author.

Her book ‘Don’t Label Me’ offers practical wisdom for navigating disagreement with integrity and curiosity, earning praise from Chris Rock as “genius”. Her forthcoming book, 'Moral Courage,' deepens this work for an even messier world.

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis.

It's a time for everyone - Indigenous, non-Indigenous and newcomers - to reflect upon and learn the history, sacrifices, cultures, contributions, and strength of First Nations, Inuit and Metis people. It’s important to keep in mind that First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples each have their own unique histories. And within each group, there are distinct histories.

The summer solstice is a day that Indigenous peoples around the world have celebrated for thousands of years. The Earth’s northern hemisphere is tilted as close as it gets toward the sun, and we enjoy the longest day of light in the year.

Across the land, First Nations will gather and share in ceremonies and traditions that have been carried out for thousands of years. We gather to celebrate and to thank Mother Earth for her gifts. And we gather to celebrate our languages, cultures and ceremonies, which have persevered and prevailed.

In Canada on June 21st, the summer solstice celebration has become National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day of celebration for the contributions and cultures of Indigenous peoples.

Soaring Spirit Festival & Pow Wow 2026 (multiple dates)

The meaning behind the visuals

The visual identities for National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day bring together meaningful symbols and vibrant colours to highlight the richness and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis cultures.

In the centre are three symbols: a feather, a narwhal, and a fiddle. Each represents the distinct cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities, brought together in a circular flowing composition to reflect the connection between the groups.

Around these central elements, are flowing curved lines and floral motifs which represent the connection to land, water, and all living beings. Dotted patterns symbolize beadwork, a traditional art form shared across First Nations, Inuit and Métis cultures. Stars honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, representing how they are always in our thoughts, even in moments of celebration. Flames represent the enduring strength of knowledge, culture, and resilience, and the shared responsibility to carry these stories forward.

The coloured background design features a sunrise-inspired palette that reflects the summer solstice, a time of celebration for many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. Warm gradients evoke light, renewal, and possibility. The colour palette used in the white-background version, inspired by the rainbow, celebrates the diversity and richness of Indigenous cultures across Canada.

Check out the teaching clinic in Room R101 in the David Braley Athletic & Recreation Center (DBARC) at Mohawk College's Fennell Campus. 

Students, employees, and members of the public are invited to book massage treatments with our Semester 3 and 4 students. Massages are $15 + HST for all clients.

As part of the requirements to graduate and become eligible to write the provincial certification exams with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario, students must complete a total of 330 hours of supervised direct massage therapy to the public. So, by coming in for a massage, you’re helping our students earn their hours and prepare for their regulatory exams.

The massage treatments on campus offer relaxation and treatment of minor musculoskeletal issues to clients while providing students an opportunity to practice their hands-on skills and knowledge of anatomy and physiology. We encourage students, faculty and staff, and members of the public to book an appointment today!

Help support an upcoming global experience trip! From February 14 – 22, students from Mohawk College and McMaster University will travel to a rural community near Jutiapa, Guatemala, to partner with Dream, Invest, Grow. During this trip, students and faculty will work in remote mountain communities on healthcare initiatives, including the installation of smokeless stoves.

To raise funds for this important work, they're hosting a Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, January 17, at St. Elizabeth’s Village in Hamilton.

At the President’s Kick-Off event in August, we welcomed employees with 25 years or more of service to the stage to receive their years of service pin.  

Now it’s time for all employees with 5 – 25 years of service to celebrate!

Join the Beyond Borders team for an informative session on International Experience Canada, a Government of Canada program that helps Canadians gain international work experience in more than 30 countries. Explore how you can work, travel, and grow your career abroad.

Students are invited to join our online webinar at 12:00 p.m. to explore the full range of Beyond Borders opportunities, from study abroad to international service learning and global mobility programs. 

Wednesday, November 26 — Beyond Borders for Faculty (Online) 

Faculty are encouraged to attend this session at 12 pm to discover how global learning can enrich the classroom and how to integrate international experiences into academic programming. 

Thursday, November 27 — Partnership Spotlight: Academics Without Borders 

Join Beyond Borders at 12:00 p.m. to learn more about Mohawk College’s collaboration with Academics Without Borders (AWB), an organization that empowers volunteers from higher education to share their expertise and strengthen institutions around the world.  Professor Judith Orogun will share her inspiring experience volunteering in Kenya, supporting local educators, and advancing access to quality education.  This session celebrates the power of volunteering in global education and how Mohawk faculty and staff can make a difference beyond borders.

Mohawk College Recreation Therapy student Madeline “Maddy” Hallett was a vibrant, generous, and bright light to so many people. Maddy loved working with children, and was dedicated to her college program and her placement at Lansdowne Children’s Centre.

Unfortunately, Maddy’s bright light was dimmed too soon. Unbeknownst to anyone, she had a congenital malformation or weak spot in the blood vessels in her brain that suddenly ruptured.

Enduring two brain surgeries and countless treatments, Maddy fought valiantly, but, tragically, the damage to Maddy’s brain was too severe, and she passed away peacefully in February 2025 at the age of 20.

Maddy’s Recreation Therapy Diploma was conferred posthumously at a Mohawk College Convocation ceremony and was presented to her parents in June 2025.

The two blood transfusions that Maddy received during her illness were possible because of people donating blood through Canadian Blood Services (CBS). Maddy’s story has inspired people to donate blood and to fundraise for CBS.

Maddy’s Partners blood donation team has 43 members, many of whom are new blood donors. Maddy’s mother works at ACTRA Toronto, and her colleagues have raised more than $8,000 for CBS. Mohawk Students’ Association also made a donation to CBS in Maddy’s honour.

This October, Mohawk College is hosting a Blood Drive in Maddy’s honour.

Maddy has also inspired people to sign up to be organ/tissue donors as she was, and to donate their hair to make wigs for people with cancer/medical hair loss, continuing her legacy of helping others even after her passing.

Summer Photo Submission

The summer is upon us, and we hope you are finding time to relax and make memories with the special people in your life. We are asking employees to share some of these moments with us so that we can compile them into a short video that will be shown at the President’s Kick-Off on August 28.

Mohawk Sustainability is teaming up with New Hope Community Bikes to offer a free, beginner-friendly bike tire change workshop on Wednesday, July 30 from 11 am to 12:30 pm at the Fennell Campus. No experience required, and tools will be provided.

The Great Indigenous Bake Off is an immersive, hands-on workshop that celebrates the rich culinary traditions of Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island (North America). Through baking challenges, participants will explore traditional and contemporary Indigenous recipes, ingredients, and foodways, while learning about the cultural, historical, and spiritual significance of food in Indigenous communities.

When we take the time to acknowledge the land on which we live, work, play and grow, we acknowledge all the Earth provides us and our place in preserving and improving the land for current and future generations.  

Indigenous peoples’ relationship to and respect of the land is significant, as they consider the Earth to be their Mother. They offer daily gratitude to all of creation for continuing to maintain a balanced existence for everyone. Indigenous peoples are stewards of the land, which signifies a responsibility to protect the land, waters, and the creatures that inhabit it.  

Settlers, descendants of settlers, and newcomers alike can create their own land acknowledgement and outline their commitments and responsibilities for keeping the balance and protection of Mother Earth. Due to the history and ongoing realities of colonialism, people who are not from Indigenous communities may also outline their responsibilities and commitments to reconciliation and what they will bring to our shared table. 

Employees have access to resources to create your own land acknowledgement, including thoughtful examples from staff, past and present.

What's new in the COMMS 3.0?

Updated User Interface

The interface for COMMS has been redesigned to be more streamlined and easier to use. Responsive pages can accommodate most devices and screen sizes.

Web-based Course Outlines

Course Outlines are now essentially web pages, making them more accessible and easier to update. Web based outlines do not need to be generated before they can be viewed. The new design follows guidelines for accessibility compliance. This feature has been available in COMMS 2 as 'HTML preview' for the past year.
Outlines may still be downloaded as PDFs using the "Save as PDF" or "Print to PDF" functionality in most major browsers.

In-place Course Outline Editing

Instead of going back and forth between the outline editor and the generated outline, users can now edit the outline in-place. Or to put it another way, what you see in the editor is the Course Outline.

MyCanvas Integration of Course Outlines

The new COMMS 3.0 LTI integration is an external tool that uses information available within the MyCanvas LMS to automatically retrieve the correct course outline from the COMMS system without having to manually upload it into the course files. The course outlines are stored, edited, and approved in COMMS, and now via this new integration, the most up-to-date version of a course outline can be seamlessly read in a course’s Modules when the “COMMS Course Outline” external tool is used.

Improved Search & Report Functions

The course outline search is now faster and easier to use.

Reports have been integrated with new 'detail' pages relating to different Org Units (Academic Year, School, Department, Program, Course). These may be accessed using the Search function. For example, to access the Course Outline overview report for the current year, search for '2024-2025' and select the 'Academic Year' result. The detail page will have various reports and as well as management functions that are visible depending on your user role.
