The Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC), with support from Mohawk College, is looking to build a new $25 million union office and training centre in Grimsby.

“We’re going to replace (the existing structure) with what will be a 40,000-square-foot (3,700-square-metre) facility to meet the growth that we’ve had in this place over the last few years and to make way for the training centre that we hope to build with Mohawk,” said CLAC provincial director Ian DeWaard.

Mohawk president Paul Armstrong said the college will be leasing about 836 square metres  of space in the new facility.

“That will allow us to expand apprenticeship seats in plumbing, electrical and HVAC,” said Armstrong.

He said the Grimsby centre will provide training for about 300 students. That’s in addition to 4,700 apprentices at the college’s Stoney Creek campus.

Since opening Cainsville Tire Discounter in 1987, Geoff Edge has successfully continued the family legacy in the tire business dating back to the 1930s.

Edge, who himself has been involved in the family business for decades, explained his early start.

“Later, while earning my business diploma at Mohawk College, I would wake up early, take a service truck to change tires for our biggest account, Finch Transport, and then head to class.  After graduating from college, I had to figure out my next move. I stayed in the tire business largely because my dad needed me. That’s just what you did back then….you helped the family and I continued in the business.”

For the next 20 years, Edge learned the ins and outs of the tire business, and would eventually get a chance to open up his own shop, albeit during a challenging time.

The funding is expected to help nearly 200 jobseekers access training for in-demand careers while upgrading facilities and equipment used by apprentices. The investments are being delivered through the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program, Apprenticeship Capital Grant and Skills Development Fund Capital Stream.

Mohawk College Receives Largest Share of Hamilton Trades Funding

Mohawk College will receive more than $2.6 million across several initiatives. That includes $1.89 million to modernize electrical, carpentry, automotive and millwright training at its Stoney Creek campus.

Another $483,252 will fund new electrical training equipment, while $265,699 will support pre-apprenticeship training for 15 sheet metal workers, including hands-on instruction, certifications and paid work placements.

“Continued investment in skilled trades training allows Mohawk College to enhance the equipment and facilities that support hands-on learning across a wide range of programs, from automotive and truck and coach, to carpentry, refrigeration and welding. Keeping our training environments current with industry needs strengthens the student experience, supports learners throughout their journey into the trades and helps ensure the employers have access to graduates who are prepared to contribute from day one. Skilled trades training is a priority for Mohawk and we appreciate the Ontario government’s continued support,” said Dr. Cebert Adamson, Vice President Academic at Mohawk College.

At Mohawk College in Hamilton, next to the gym where students shed their heavy winter layers before working out, there are four rows of sleek, almost sci-fi-looking structures. Steel pillars rise to support tilted, solar-panelled roofing shielding some 40 cars – each open-air structure can accommodate 25 – and a few dishevelled students after a sudden burst of freezing rain. From a low angle, it might not look like much: just another parking lot in a city full of too many. But if you tore this one up and planted a two-acre forest in its place, it would reduce carbon emissions by the same amount. This solar carport, the largest in Ontario, helps keep the lights on in that gym.

CHCH News legend Annette Hamm has signed off for her last time on Morning Live.

It brings a long, illustrious career to a close, but she’s not fully done just yet. That career began with CHCH News back in 1986. She worked as a writer, a crime reporter, a weekend news anchor and eventually she moved to the morning show desk.

“There’s been lots of exciting things that I have done, and I’m really gonna miss the adrenaline,” said Hamm. “I thought my crime reporter days were my very favourite days, but I also really love the show here.”

For years, people woke up to Hamm’s voice in the morning, through all the ups and downs, good times and silly times.

Hamm is a Hamiltonian through and through: she attended Mohawk College and in 2016 she was given an Alumni of Distinction award — success she credits to her colleagues and her viewers.

Hamilton, ON (April 2026)— Canadian Colleges for a Resilient Recovery (C2R2) and eCampusOntario announced today a new partnership that will strengthen collaboration across postsecondary institutions and expand access to skills training opportunities for learners across Canada.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to enhancing coordination across educational institutions to improve access to flexible, high-quality learning opportunities that respond to evolving labour market needs. By aligning national and provincial efforts, C2R2 and eCampusOntario will support a more connected and accessible postsecondary education ecosystem.

As part of this collaboration, C2R2 will work with eCampusOntario to integrate its member institutes’ programs into the Skills for Jobs Canada, Canada’s national upskilling platform, designed to connect learners and employers with short-duration, skills-focused education and training. Mohawk College has been recognized with the Large Employer Award at the Burlington Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards Gala, held on May 13.

Presented annually by the Burlington Chamber of Commerce, the Business Excellence Awards celebrate organizations and leaders making significant contributions to Burlington’s economy and community. This year’s gala recognized 73 finalists across eight award categories, highlighting the strength and diversity of the city’s business community.

The Large Employer Award recognizes Mohawk College’s ongoing commitment to workforce development and community partnership in the Burlington region.

Tatum Wilkes and her dad Patrick love sledge hockey, but when it comes to scoring goals it’s Tatum who has bragging rights.

The 20-year-old sledge hockey veteran from Brantford used to play for the South Coast Special Needs Kids.

But these days, Tatum is an early childhood education student at Mohawk College and hasn’t had the opportunity to play much sledge hockey this year. She was invited by Const. Jeremy Renton to join the Norfolk OPP team.

That includes the maintenance of a new class of submarines that Canada is set to get.

It comes after the prime minister’s defence spending announcement this week.

Ontario Shipyards and Hanwha Ocean made the agreements to collaborate on ship building, maintenance, but also on education.

Mohawk College signed a letter of intent with the two companies, which will provide opportunities for students.

There’s also a plan for a hub to be built, right here in Hamilton."

"In a world where children are rarely more than a swipe away from entertainment, boredom has become something to avoid at all costs.

But according to Calissa Ngozi, a mental health expert and child and youth care professor at Mohawk College, that constant stimulation may be doing more harm than good.

Ngozi told CTV’s Your Morning Tuesday that children are growing up in an environment filled with non-stop noise, screens and structured activities, leaving little room for quiet and unstructured time.

“We’ve lost the art of pause,” she said, pointing to everything from background television to YouTube videos and highly engaging video games that are designed to keep children hooked."

January 16 | BU Café and Market, which recently opened in Oakville, is a new café founded by Jacob Stretton, a 2019 graduate of the Community Integration through Cooperative Education program, and his mother. Named after Jacob’s BU Candles brand—standing for “be yourself”—the café will employ staff with disabilities and reflects Jacob’s journey of resilience and community inclusion.

January 13, 2026| "The Mountaineers, who captured the OCAA championship last season, have opened the 2025-26 campaign with a perfect 9-0 record. Mohawk is averaging a plus-30 point differential and has won every game by at least 10 points.

Mohawk's dominance has continued into the new year. During the holiday break, the Mountaineers earned two non-conference wins, defeating the Durham Lords 85-26 before setting a program record with 118 points in a 62-point victory over the Georgian Grizzlies. In their return to conference play, Mohawk posted a 90-56 win over the Redeemer Royals."

“[Mitchell] Pawlik went to Mohawk College for a two-year diploma in Building Renovations, living with his mother, Tracey Richardson, in Dundas during the program. After his first year, he was able to get work as a labourer doing tasks such as drywalling, framing and installing cabinetry. A Mohawk College student was one of more than 40 Burlington Teen Tour Band alumni who took part in the pregame show for Game 1 of the World Series at Toronto’s Rogers Centre on Friday, October 24, 2025. It brought together generations of former band members for a once-in-a-lifetime performance.

“It was nice to catch up with old friends and meet new ones,” said Owen Korver, a Mohawk College music student who played trombone from 2013 to 2022. “It’s an experience I never thought I’d have.”

Enterprise Business class of 2005, Faron Benoit, shares his journey of creating and building the popular I Heart Beer festivals across Ontario.

Benoit, who started his business in Brantford and also makes his home in the city, explained his professional background and the early beginnings of the festival.

“I went to McMaster University for Economics and followed that up with a degree in Online Business from Mohawk College. This was about 20 years ago, when vlogging was popular and the internet was becoming huge. Initially, I aimed for a career in finance, but I also eventually wanted to start my own business—which is why I went to Mohawk,” he said.

Earlier last week SGA, the Oklahoma City Thunder superstar, made one last stop at the Mohawk College gym for a scrimmage with the Mountaineers.

“I think a lot of us tried to downplay what it was, but in reality this is like playing against 2009 Kobe Bryant or 2016 LeBron James,” said Mountaineer guard Kazim Raza. “It was amazing, man. It’s definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

(September 15, 2025): Ashley Borzellino, a 2019 graduate of Mohawk's Civil Engineering program hopes to use her year-long reign to influence girls to work in the construction or engineering field.

"Ashley Borzellino isn’t normally one to be all dolled up.

The Hamilton woman can usually be found on construction sites in Brantford, working as a development inspector, donning steel-toed boots, an orange reflective jacket, dusty jeans and a white hard hat.

But on the occasional weekend, Borzellino is almost unrecognizable as she walks across a pageant stage, wearing an elaborate gown, with her hair and makeup done to the nines.

'People are always shocked when they find out about my hobby,' said Borzellino, in an interview. 'And I can’t really blame them.'"

A former CHCH employee and Mohawk College graduate from the class of 1982, Wayne Rabishaw celebrated his retirement in style in the skies, getting to fly over the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton in a second World War Lancaster.

Officially announced on Thursday, July 31, the Ontario government is selling the former Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital through the Surplus Lands program in support of developing two long-term care homes with 512 new long-term care beds as well as more than 1,000 additional homes. 

As part of the deal for the land located across the street from the Fennell Campus, Mohawk College has purchased 7 acres for future expansion.

Brad Whiteclaw, a breast cancer survivor, said when he was first diagnosed his oncologist offered monthly injections and daily pills as options for treatment over five years. The price tag was $50,000 out-of-pocket. “I was very upset,” he said. “When you are looking at having to pay for and having to make the decision based on financials – that’s discrimination.” Whiteclaw came to this conclusion after his doctor said it would have been covered if he was female. Making research and treatments more accessible to the public is one of the goals of Breast Cancer Canada.

Mohawk College professor Steve Philchuks and his family competed on Family Feud Canada, which aired Thursday night. 

“The Philchuks also enjoyed meeting families from across the country who were there for the show. They met folks from Abbotsford, B.C., and from Down East. None had heard of Waterdown, but Steve, a business professor at Mohawk College, was quick to fill them in. The Philchuks also give a shout-out to their hometown on the show.”

You never know what athletic talent is walking the halls of Mohawk College.

David Hopton, head coach of Mohawk’s cross-country team, found that out when west Niagara residents Annie Sterenberg, Zoe Thibault and Tori Hendriks helped the women’s squad achieve its first provincial championship in 36 years and their first-ever medal at the nationals. 

None of the women were recruited by Mohawk for their running ability.

This holiday season, Breast Cancer Canada is partnering with advertising students from Mohawk College, The Agency, to launch Progress Is Our Gift, a dynamic campaign designed to encourage Canadians to give the gift of research. The multi-media campaign, launching this week, invites Canadians to look beyond traditional holiday gifts and instead donate to a cause that can save lives.
