What you need to watch for

Some of the more common phishing scams are as follows:

• Extortion Emails: You may receive emails claiming they have "monitored your activity" or have "compromising information." These are scams designed to scare you into paying a ransom. Do not pay and do not reply.
• Fake Canvas Notifications: Look out for emails that look like official Canvas alerts (e.g., "New Message from Instructor" or "Account Expiring") that ask you to click a link to log in.
• Financial Aid or Refund Scams: Be wary of messages asking you to "verify your identity" to receive a tuition refund or scholarship.
• Job Offers which appear too good to be true.
• Requests to purchase gift cards.

How to protect yourself:

• Don’t Click Links: Beware of emails or text messages which ask you to validate your account by following a link.
• Verify the Sender: Check the "From" address carefully. Scammers often use addresses that look similar to official ones but have slight misspellings.
• Update Your Passwords: While passwords were not reported as part of this breach, it is always a good practice to use unique passwords for different accounts and enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) where available.

What you can do if you are suspicious about a message:

If you think the message might be real, use a different contact method to reach out to the person or company by getting their contact information anywhere else but from the e-mail. If you require assistance validating if a College sent or received e-mail is real, Contact the IT Service Desk:

The Homewood Health EFAP program includes not only Counselling Services – for when you need professional help with a challenging situation – but also Life Smart Coaching Services.

Life Smart Coaching includes caregiving, life planning, health management, and career management services. Each of the services has been developed to allow you to take a proactive approach to managing everyday challenges and life transitions, and to receive information and support suited to your unique situation.

Counselling and Coaching services are available in person, by phone or video, or via online e-counselling (message exchanges or real-time chat).

In addition to Counselling and Life Smart Coaching, the Homewood Health EFAP program offers access to a new innovative online experience called Pathfinder. Cyber criminals are experts at being misleading. By learning to spot suspicious signs and forming good habits now, you can protect yourself from future threats. This week is all about making cyber safety a part of your daily routine. Just like any good habit, a few small steps now can protect you from big problems later.

This Week's Focus: Protecting Yourself from Malware

We'll discuss how to identify and defend against common threats like malware. Knowing how to spot suspicious files, downloads, and messages is key to staying safe.

Simple habits that can keep you safe from online threats like malware, viruses, and AI-generated scams.

• Safe Downloading Learn to download files safely from trusted sources to avoid malware.
• Antivirus Protection Why having good antivirus software is like an alarm system for your devices.
• Malware Short for "malicious software," malware is a program designed to damage your computer, steal your information, or carry out malicious activities without your knowledge.
• Ransomware A form of malware that locks you out of your files or devices until you pay a ransom.
• Spotting AI How to identify AI-generated scams that are becoming more common and convincing.

Effective November 1, 2025, TELUS Health will no longer manage our EFAP program. We are transitioning to a new partner, Homewood Health. Employees will now have access to a full range of health and wellness services available under our new EFAP Program.

Why the change?

We continuously evaluate our benefits to ensure they meet your needs. Initiated by the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security, the review will help to assess and validate the changes the college has already made and identify areas for improvements.

Last year, Mohawk College’s Elizabeth Gray, a counsellor in the Indigenous Student Services department, along with Josh McGurk, photographer and videographer in the Communications department, led the production of a video on Trafficking Awareness in Canada. The following is a summary of these programs and services and, where applicable, how to access alternative providers for these services.

• Community Employment Services - The college has ended its contract with the province to run the Community Employment Services location on Centennial Avenue and at the Fennell campus. These locations are no longer operating. Requests for employment services support should be referred to www.fedcapcanada.org. (Please note that it will take time for the FedCap website to be updated. Therefore, the Mohawk locations may still be identified on the site.)
• Academic Upgrading is no longer available through the college but continues to be available at other service providers in Hamilton and the surrounding region. Please connect with one of the providers below for more information.
  • The Adult Basic Education Association (ABEA) is the adult learning network in Hamilton.  All services are free. The ABEA can be reached at pathways@abea.on.ca  or 905-527-2222. *If you’re interested in attending classes through the school board, please contact the ABEA.
  • ACE Distance is an online provider that provides free programming where participants can access the same ACE courses/certificates offered in Academic Upgrading. They can be reached by emailing info@cscau.com
• City School and its associated programs and services closed on March 31, including all community sites.

The following programs and services are not impacted by the changes. These programs continue to be offered by Mohawk College:

• LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers) supports newcomers who want to improve their communication skills in English. For more information, visit the LINC program page on the college’s website.
• Deaf Empowerment Program – The college continues to offer the free Academic Upgrading Deaf Empowerment Program, which provides Deaf and hard of hearing adults the opportunity to upgrade their skills in math, reading, and writing, as well as basic computer and employability skills. • Dual Credit and Early College Graduation programs remain available for interested community members. For more information, visit the Early College Initiatives page on the college’s website.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is offered to someone with an emerging mental health problem or in a mental health crisis until appropriate treatment is found or the situation is resolved.

You may already possess a vast array of skills. What this course does, is give you the opportunity to add to that kit. Mental Health First Aid is translatable to all facets of your life and not merely directed to your clients or staff. You will gain the ability to apply the skills you learn with your friends, loved ones, and most importantly to yourself, and you will see that it is not only for people in crisis. It is essentially an advanced communications course that will serve you in all relationships. This course can be a game changer for people!

This 9-hour evidence-based course has a blended learning approach consisting of:

• Introduction - Virtually attend and meet Mental Health First Aid Instructor, Penny MacLean, where she explains to logistics of the course. (date #1 = 30 minutes)
• Module 1 - Complete online, self-directed learning. (approximately 2 hours)
• Module 2 - Participate in an interactive, virtual classroom session, facilitated by Penny, which gives participants the opportunity to practice and increase their awareness and confidence. (date #2 = 7 hours)

Your training culminates in a nationally recognized certified micro-credential.

Security & Emergency Management wishes all a safe and happy seasonal break.

New technologies are constantly reshaping our world and organizations must continually adapt to embrace these changes. 

After a year of extensive planning, Mohawk has officially launched a 3-year Banner Business Transformation (BBT) program - one of the largest projects the college has undertaken in recent years.  

It encompasses re-implementing Banner, Mohawk’s Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP) to replace many end-of-life systems, tools and databases.  

Key projects within this initiative include updates to the Student, Human Resources, Finance, Reporting and Ellucian Experience modules. Additionally, as many critical functions across Mohawk rely on Banner as the primary source of data, approximately 130 integrated tools and systems will be reconfigured to align with the new system. 

Since Banner was first introduced in 2004, the college has made various customizations to support internal processes. While these served the college well, they now make it difficult to take advantage of available upgrades and improvements. Re-implementing Banner will allow us to transition from our traditional roots to an engaging platform that will empower efficiencies for both staff and students. 

“BBT is our first step towards modernization,” said Katie Burrows, VP Students and International, and co-sponsor of the project. “We will implement enhancements to our back office systems to lay a strong foundation that we can build upon with increased adaptability.” 

“The work underway to stabilize our ERP will bring significant, long-term benefits to the college. Moving to a cloud-based platform will enhance Mohawk’s system stability and performance.” explained, co-sponsor Kim Watkins VP of Corporate Services. 

Through this initiative, we are gaining a deeper understanding of how all our systems, tools, and processes work together. This includes carefully documenting the college's enterprise architecture and its interconnected parts, which ensure the delivery of quality education and services to students. This will serve Mohawk College employees incredibly well, especially for training new hires. 

There are many concurrent projects taking place throughout the BBT program. With our phased rollout approach, we can begin to take advantage of some increased functionalities now, long before Banner 9 goes live. 

To ensure all employees feel prepared to use the re-implemented Banner system, BBT will support the college’s readiness for change by introducing comprehensive, role-specific training materials as well as self-directed and instructor-led learning opportunities. These resources will equip end-users with the skills needed to navigate the new system and perform their roles effectively. 

This transformation is a journey; impacted stakeholders will be engaged during different phases of the project.

Looking to add colour to your PowerPoint presentations? Rather than adding a shape to the background–which might affect the presentation's accessibility–use the built-in Fill feature.

To use the Fill feature:

• Select the text block you'd like to add colour to
• Select the Fill icon on the Home ribbon (it resembles a paint can)
• Choose a colour from the colour palette

If you’d like to use a custom colour that is not on the palette, refer to the Mohawk College brand guidelines at MyMohawk > Employee > Integrated Communications - Employee Toolkit > Mohawk College Brand Guidelines as well as the Accessible Colour Contrast Guide available through Optimizely.

Don’t forget to manually confirm that the colour contrast meets accessibility guidelines using WebAIM’s online color contrast checker.

Let's Talk videos are produced by the Mohawk College Human Resources department.  In these videos, Sharon Kamassah, Manager, Workplace Equity and Inclusion, speaks candidly with her guests about how EDI may be experienced, integrated and practiced in the Mohawk College community. These conversations are intentionally unscripted and natural. Growth Mindset has been the focus of Stanford University Professor Carol Dweck’s research and findings in education for many years. Since this initial research, there has been increasing interest in how individuals and organizations define success based on a Fixed or Growth Mindset. According to Udemy’s 2020 Workplace Learning Trends Report, having a growth mindset — or the ability to continue learning in order to adapt to change — was ranked as the most important soft skill for career success.

As we prepare for what the future holds in our workplace, one thing is for certain, we will need to change how we see the work environment, how we collaborate and how we shift our mindsets in preparation for the Future of Work.

Jessica Lapcevich, Manager, Risk, Legal and Governance Services, believes that a leader’s ability to lead a successful and high-functioning team is underpinned by credibility. Gabriela Soraggi, Change Manager, leads the people side of change on various strategic college-wide initiatives within the Enterprise Systems Strategy. As a lifelong learner, she continuously looks for opportunities for learning, challenge and change. She has a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and is a certified Change Management Practitioner (CMP) and Human Resources Leader (CHRL).

Rebecca Sprague is the Director, HR Services overseeing the functions of Total Rewards (Compensation, Benefits and Pension) and Human Resources Information Systems at Mohawk College. Having spent over 15 years working in post-secondary education throughout the College sector, Rebecca is a strong proponent of continuous learning and recognizes the impact it has on personal well-being. Rebecca cares deeply about health and wellness and the impact of leadership in creating environments where employees can bring their authentic and best self to work each day.

In Managers as Multipliers of Well-Being, instructor Laura Putnam outlines the role that leaders play in empowering employees to engage with their well-being and the impact it has on productivity and morale. She shows you how to monitor your own well-being and your team’s, and provides a template for every manager to create a positive multiplier effect for their team members. Laura offers practical recommendations for leaders - Sometimes, simple things go a long way…check ins on how life in and outside of work is going, a walking meeting or encouraging participation in on-campus wellness events.

Eric Harvey is the Manager of Admissions for domestic students at Mohawk College. He has worked in various student services roles across the College, with the goal of empowering and supporting students; and he has brought this same attitude in leading his team.  Eric is passionate about the importance of education in our society, and in developing the skills and talents of his team while maintaining a healthy, positive, and professional team environment.

 “I lead with a collaborative approach; and I am fortunate to lead a highly-competent team, with decades of experience in post-secondary environment.  As a leader, my focus is to find ways to leverage my team’s experience to ensure that we are assisting applicants in the best way possible. I attended the virtual session on Leading Hybrid Teams earlier this year, and it provided many insights on how to best work as a leader in a hybrid environment. It challenged my assumptions as a leader and gave me some solid resources and strategies to lead my team in a highly effective manner.” – Eric

Beth Gibson, Manager of Workforce Partnerships, believes that change is constant, and that was demonstrated over the past few years of the pandemic. To help a team manage change, a leader must continually build their toolkit to encompass strategies to support organizational growth while managing the constant shift of our work and learning environments.

“I thrive on change; that’s part of who I am and is reflective in my personal and professional life. While I can quickly adapt to changing environments, I recognize that everyone manages this process differently and that we need to look at the most risk-averse person when we build strategies that are within our control. Amanda Anderson, Manager, Training & Investigations with Mohawk College Security Services, is the department lead investigator in all criminal and behaviour incidents relating to the college. Prior to joining the college, she worked for 10 years as a Special Constable at Brock University. In that role, she provided enforcement of the laws of the Criminal Code of Canada, provincial statutes, by-laws and policies and procedures while preserving the peace, protecting life and property, preventing crime, and promoting community-oriented services. 

“I am passionate about keeping everyone safe, wherever they may be. Here at Mohawk College, we have Emergency Response Procedures to ensure that every one knows what to do, and how to react, in the event of an emergency — whether it’s medical, fire, lockdown, or active threat. Knowing these procedures is critical to everyone’s safety. After all, we all play a part in keeping every one safe.” ~Amanda 

Amanda takes pride in educating the Mohawk College community on crime prevention, active threat education and personal safety and de-escalation.  She highly recommends the Mohawk College Emergency Response Procedure Playlist. She firmly believes that preparedness is a critical part in keeping everyone safe on campus.

Julia Hansen, Manager of Planning, is a strong advocate for lifelong learning. She pursued her undergraduate degree as a mature student, took certificate and general interest courses; and just recently, completed her Master’s Degree in Leadership.

“Lifelong learning is something that I practice in my own life. In my learning journey, I am fortunate to be surrounded by people who allowed me to learn; as a result, I gained the courage to push myself to go out of my comfort zone. I also realized that learning may take time, and may not give “immediate returns”, but it is never a waste of time. There will always be opportunities to put that learning to use.” ~Julia

This 33-minute dialogue on Lifelong Learning as a Tool in Building Your Career, describes Dr. Jacquelyn Malcolm’s career path to becoming the CIO and VP of Enrollment, Marketing & Communications. Dr. Malcolm encourages women to apply for positions they are not 100% qualified or ready for. One’s willingness to learn on the job and confidence in one’s self can be proof of one’s commitment and ability to rise to the challenge. This dialogue is also a great eye-opener for hiring managers --- to be open to providing opportunities for advancement, even those candidates who don’t hit all of the checkbox items.

Neil Culp, Director, Employee Relations & Talent Acquisition, spends most of his time at work in discussions with others.  Neil’s role is to act as an advisor to the College leadership team on a wide variety of HR, Labour and employment issues.  And as you can imagine, those discussions can get challenging at times.  So, the skills of communication, influence, and conflict management are central to what he does every single day.

The 57-minute course on Centered Communication provides learners with a great overview of the core skills and behaviours that lead to truly effective communication.  The course is really enjoyable and has some great take-aways, and reminders depending on where you are in your learning.  The core learning of the course though, is to ensure you are communicating with the right intent at every stage of your discussions.

As Director of Alumni Relations Wendy Makey works to create lifelong relationships with Mohawk students, graduates and the community in an effort to keep them engaged in meaningful ways with the college.

Leading with Emotional Intelligence is a 1 hour, 2-minute online learning session that outlines how to understand and harness emotions to cultivate productivity and relationships. By boosting your emotional intelligence you can better understand and lead teams, make change, work with peers, and build your awareness of others to become an inspiring and effective leader.

Theresa Merwin, Director – Simulation, Business Development and Interprofessional Learning has been able to implore techniques be happier at work. From practicing gratitude, being authentic, and to using tips to manage interruptions and reduce error rates on her work, Theresa consciously focuses on reducing stress in her day-to- day environment.

Now, more than ever, we need to accept that no one can do it all and make everyone happy. Brittany Lauton, Manager, Student Life, at Mohawk College knows that good leadership starts with an open mind and a sincere willingness to be wrong. To support each other well and grow as individuals and as teams, you have to be willing to think beyond best practice, try new things, celebrate BOTH successes and failures, and iterate, iterate, iterate!

When you approach a problem or challenge through a design thinking lens, you are free to decenter yourself and whatever bias you bring to the table to really begin to understand the needs of your end-user—in our case: our students and our teams—to begin to design, build and test innovative solutions to problems big and small.” ~Brittany

 This 33 minute session on Overcoming Cognitive Bias is so valuable. It challenges the viewer to approach the world and our jobs with curiosity and offers a number of simple but effective strategies to interrogate our biases and blind spots on the road to becoming more critical thinkers, better decision makers, and, ultimately, more equitable leaders.
