LinkedIn Learning – October 2021: The “New” Work Team

Available now!

The pandemic changed the way we work: remote work, hybrid work, flexible work schedules, virtual meetings, virtual collaboration, and learning of many new skills. The jury is still out on what the future of work will look like, but one thing is certain: we can expect the impact of the pandemic to be long lasting. With some of us already back on campus, others scheduled to return in the coming months and some who are still uncertain, we must continue to be creative, resilient, and adaptive. This month’s challenge focuses on the “new” work team by exploring ways to increase collaboration and teamwork in a remote or hybrid team, improving connections with co-workers, recalibrating home and work life and reflecting on our collective experiences of the past year.

**All previous challenges remain available for you to explore at your own pace in our LinkedIn Learning Challenge Playlist - with daily learning tasks taking less than five minutes to complete! Follow the playlist for notifications as new themes are added.

Great Ideas for Teaching (GIFT) Conference

Wednesday, October 13-Thursday, October 14, 2021, from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

The schedule of sessions and registration will be available on October 6th.

We invite you to join us virtually to explore a variety of teaching and learning strategies. We are excited to announce Keynote presentations from Gerard Etienne and Maxine Carter.

This year GIFT focuses on Student Success through an EDI (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) Lens. As we strive at Mohawk for optimal equity and inclusion for all of our diverse learners, we want to hear about your great ideas for teaching and learning that contribute to these goals. Perhaps you make conscious efforts to ensure your learners feel included in your classroom, teach about issues relating to equity and diversity, or design curriculum and assessments that are equitable to, and inclusive of all learners.

Know Your Rights: A Guide for LGBTQ2+ Employees (from Pride at Work Canada)

Wednesday, October 27, 2021, from 12:00 to 1:30 pm

Pride at Work Canada’s Proud Partners collectively employ over one million Canadians and include leading employers from across the Canadian economy. Each of these employers recognizes LGBTQ2+ individuals as key to a productive, engaged workforce. Their membership brings them into a network of sharing good practice, and helps them establish best-in-class workplace initiatives. Mohawk College is a Proud Partner!

Every worker has the right to be free from gender expression, gender identity, and sexual orientation discrimination in the workplace. Yet too often the burden falls on the worker to advocate for themselves. Recognizing this, Pride at Work Canada has created a new resource for LGBTQ2+ workers who are seeking information about their rights in the workplace. Join us for this virtual panel event to celebrate the launch of our new resource, “Know Your Rights: A Guide for LGBTQ2+ Employees”. Our discussion will bring together legal experts and advocates to examine what workplace discrimination looks like for LGBTQ2+ employees, the rights that they are entitled to, and the responsibilities of employers to create non-discriminatory and safe(r) workplaces.

Learning Objectives:

  • The legal protections of gender expression, gender identity, and sexual orientation in Canada
  • What workplace discrimination looks like for LGBTQ2+ employees
  • How LGBTQ2+ employees and job seekers can advocate for their rights

This discussion is open to all who wish to register.

National Member Webinar: Creating Space for Uncomfortable Conversations (from Pride at Work Canada)

Wednesday, November 17, 2021, from 12 to 1 pm

Pride at Work Canada’s Proud Partners collectively employ over one million Canadians and include leading employers from across the Canadian economy. Each of these employers recognizes LGBTQ2+ individuals as key to a productive, engaged workforce. Their membership brings them into a network of sharing good practice, and helps them establish best-in-class workplace initiatives. Mohawk College is a Proud Partner!

One of the biggest inclusion challenges for many employers is how to communicate on the subjects gender expression, gender identity, and sexual orientation. Engaging on these topics can result in conversations that are uncomfortable for LGBTQ2+ employees and those working in allyship with them. Join diversity, equity, & inclusion (DEI) professional B Adair (he/him) as he unpacks the importance of strong communication skills when navigating tough conversations, from a workplace DEI perspective.

In this session, case studies will be provided of how to talk to those who know little about LGBTQ2+ communities, as well as how to provide welcoming feedback. You’ll learn why diverse voices matter in the workplace and how to overcome “diversity fatigue”. Most of all, you’ll gain new skills and knowledge about maintaining a calm and open-minded approach to having difficult conversations.

Learning Goals:

  • Navigating difficult conversations related to gender expression, gender identity, and sexual orientation
  • How to address comments of diversity fatigue or prejudice
  • How to approach difficult questions as an LGBTQ2+ ally

This event is exclusive for employees of Proud Partners and Community Partners. Mohawk College is a Proud Partner!

November 15-16 & 18-19, 2021

eCampusOntario’s annual TESS conference will be held online, throughout the week providing flexible half day sessions on November 15-16 and 18-19.

Conversations will highlight learning from the pandemic – and the actions we can take, individually and collectively, to crystallize that learning.

Ongoing Sessions and Resources (FREE!)

“Mo-Flow”: Mindful practice of Meditation and/or Yoga

Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, meditation begins at 11:30 am and yoga follows at 12 pm

Treat yourself to some time to focus on you! Find joy in a wonderful community of Mohawk colleagues where together we practice meditation or yoga virtually via Zoom. During these challenging times, an opportunity to take pause and focus on the present moment can be useful. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, practices like meditation and yoga can help quiet your mind and allow you to look at problems from a calmer and more balanced viewpoint (CMHA, 2020). Over time, these practices can help you manage your response to stressful situations. Additionally, yoga is excellent for overall health, giving you an opportunity to lengthen and strengthen areas of the body that get compressed and out of balance with a technology driven lifestyle. This restorative style of yoga is good for any level - from new to experienced.

Join on Zoom: https://mohawkcollege.zoom.us/j/165905801

  • Or calling: 1-855-703-8985 Canada Toll-free
  • Meeting ID: 165 905 801
  • Passcode: 917429

All levels of experience in both meditation and Yoga are welcome! You are free to join just the mindfulness/mediation portion, just the Yoga, or both. No equipment is necessary, although eventually you may consider investing in a Yoga block and band. Household items can also replicate these tools and will be discussed in the Yoga sessions. We hope to “see” you there!

We are also looking for volunteers with experience to facilitate meditations/mindfulness sessions on Fridays from 11:30 to 11:50 and a certified Yoga teacher to share Yoga on Fridays at 12pm to 12:45pm. Please reach out to kelley.hoyt@mohawkcollege.ca if you have some time to share on Fridays.

For further questions, please email one of the facilitators: kelley.hoyt@mohawkcollege.ca / linda.rourke@mohawkcollege.ca / michelle.turan@mohawkcollege.ca
