WasteFinder Pilot Project

Mohawk’s Fennell campus is soon to be home to an exciting new pilot project designed to bridge the gap between sustainability and accessibility!

A new accessible waste signage project called WasteFinder will soon be installed in 3 locations across the Fennell Campus. WasteFinder, created by STIL Solutions, consists of tactile and high contrast indicators that assist individuals who are blind or experience low-vision to independently and effectively dispose of their waste in public spaces. The indicators can be easily detected underfoot, or through mobility devices, which enables individuals of all abilities to locate waste bins and distinguish between recycling, organics and landfill waste systems. WasteFinder uses a two-part system, with a Vicinity Indicator that lets users know when they are near a waste station and a Stream Indicator that lets users know which waste stream they are directly in front of.

WasteFinder will be launched at the following locations:

1.       Cafeteria Waste Station – lower level, C-Wing

2.       C-Wing main entrance between Tim Horton’s and McIntyre Theatre

3.       J-Wing hallway, outside International Square (Room J137)

The WasteFinder Pilot Project will continue for the next 2-3 years, after which the initiative may be expanded to other locations and campuses. Feedback will also be collected throughout the pilot.
