2nd Annual Blood Drive in Memory of Alumna Madeline “Maddy” Hallett
Mohawk College hosted event returns November 25
Mohawk College Recreation Therapy student, Madeline Hallett was a vibrant, generous, and bright light to so many people. Madeline, or Maddy to those who knew her, loved working with children and was dedicated to her college program and placement at Lansdowne Children’s Centre.
Unfortunately, Maddy’s bright light was dimmed too soon. Unbeknownst to anyone, she had a congenital malformation or weak spot in the blood vessels in her brain that one day suddenly ruptured.
Enduring two brain surgeries and countless treatments, Maddy fought valiantly, but tragically, the damage to Maddy’s brain was too severe, and she passed away in February 2025 at the age of 20.
The two blood transfusions that Maddy received during her illness were possible because of people donating blood through Canadian Blood Services (CBS). Maddy’s illness has inspired people to donate blood and to fundraise for CBS.
Last October, Mohawk College hosted a Blood Drive in Maddy’s honour:
- 83 total donors attended
- 70 units of blood were collected with the potential to save up to 210 lives!
- 39 of the successful donations were from first time donors (56%)
- 26 stem cell kits were submitted
