Back-to-School Wellness & Safety Tips for the Campus Community

The beginning of a new academic year is always filled with energy, classrooms reopen, residence halls fill with life, and offices buzz with activity. But with the excitement also comes the need to slow down and remember the basics of wellness and safety. A healthy campus doesn’t just happen on its own; it’s something we create together by taking care of ourselves and looking out for one another.

1. Protect your mental health

New schedules, deadlines, and responsibilities can be overwhelming. It’s important to notice when stress is building and to take proactive steps. Small practices, like setting aside short breaks, getting outside for fresh air, or talking things through with a trusted colleague or friend, help prevent burnout. And when the stress feels heavier, make use of the wellness resources available on campus. Resources: Health & Wellness Centre | Mohawk College

2. Travel safely around campus

With so many people walking, biking, or using scooters, it’s essential to move with awareness. Use designated lanes and crosswalks, reduce speed in crowded areas, and make sure you’re visible at night with lights or reflective gear. Whether you’re on foot or behind the wheel, staying alert helps prevent accidents and keeps everyone safe.

3. Stick to healthy routines

The basics, rest, food, and hydration, matter more than we often admit. Keeping a consistent sleep schedule, packing healthy snacks, or taking time to drink water during the day helps maintain focus and energy. Even short pauses between tasks, a quick walk, stretching, or eating a meal away from your desk, are small choices that add up to stronger well-being.

4. Review safety basics

Know your nearest exits, avoid overloading outlets, and keep shared spaces clear of hazards. If you work in labs or offices, review emergency procedures and know where first aid supplies are located.

5. Build community connections

Wellness also comes from community. Taking time to connect with colleagues helps reduce stress and strengthens our campus culture

A safe, healthy campus depends on all of us. As we begin this semester, let’s carry forward not just our academic and professional goals, but also a shared commitment to wellness.
