Faculty member teaches in Guyana with Academics Without Borders
Kelley Cranford, Professor in the Centre for Teaching & Learning Innovation and recently retired professor Catharine Ozols, are spending their October at Bina Hill Institute in Annai, Guyana, guiding faculty through the Instructional Skills Workshop and Facilitator Development Workshop.
The trip and training have been made possible through the support of Academics Without Borders, whose mandate is to build capacity in higher education in developing countries by partnering with experienced professionals and academics to assist partner institutions with their most pressing academic needs. In October 2024, Kelley, Catharine, Emily Allicock, and Norbert Salty (both of Bina Hill Institute) were the successful recipients of an Academics Without Borders-supported project.
Students come from all over Guyana to learn about forestry, agriculture, information technology, tourism, and solar power technology. The Bina Hill Institute, founded in 2007, is an Indigenous tertiary school in the hinterlands of Guyana. The institute is looking to enhance:
- classroom engagement and participatory learning
- use of educational technology in the classroom
- community building
- teaching and learning strategies
The Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) and Facilitator Development Workshop (FDW) will meet these goals and build the capacity at Bina Hill to sustain the training for years to come.
Kelley, Catherine, Emily, and Norbert's work is about much more than delivering training. It’s about building sustainable approaches and amplifying the creativity and leadership that are already thriving at Bina Hill.
