General Education Elective project receives ONCAT Capacity Grant
On February 3, Mohawk College received funding in support of the “Broadening Access to Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition in General Education” project.
The project is one of 27 to receive a grant from the Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer (ONCAT), which awarded a total of $1.94 million in support of projects at publicly assisted postsecondary colleges, universities and Indigenous Institutes in Ontario. The grant recipients were officially announced at the 2026 ONCAT conference by Hon. Nolan Quinn, Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security.
The ONCAT Capacity Grant of $40,000 will support the creation of a General Education Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process that recognizes informal learning from prior work and community experiences that align with the Ministry’s General Education themes. By recognizing learning from previous employment and community experiences, this project will make PLAR more efficient, inclusive and accessible to learners.
The project is co-developed by Kimberly Costello, Professor, Liberal Studies, and General Education Coordinator and Abby Taylor, Program Manager, Communication, Liberal Studies and Mathematics & Statistics. Their work will begin this month and conclude in spring 2027.
