Health and Safety Moment: Digital Wellness

cellphone with word hello on screen

As August ushers in National Wellness Month, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on how we interact with technology in our daily lives. Digital Wellness, or Digital Wellbeing, is about finding a healthy balance between using technology and maintaining overall mental, physical, and social health. It means being mindful of how technology impacts us and making intentional choices that maximize its benefits while minimizing any negative effects. This includes managing screen time, setting boundaries, and using technology with purpose, not just out of habit or distraction.

Key aspects of digital wellness

  • Awareness and mindfulness: Notice how much time you spend on devices, which apps you use most, and how notifications affect your mood and focus.
  • Setting boundaries: Establish limits for screen time, designate certain hours or spaces as technology-free, and protect personal time from constant digital interruptions.
  • Intentional use: Before picking up your phone or opening an app, pause and ask yourself: “Why am I doing this? Is it helpful or just a habit?”
  • Digital detox: Taking regular breaks from technology lets you recharge, reconnect with yourself, and engage more fully with the physical world around you.
  • Promoting healthy habits: Use built-in features like Focus modes, Bedtime modes, and Do Not Disturb to reduce distractions and improve sleep quality.
  • Utilizing tools and features: Many devices offer dashboards to track screen time and help you manage how and when you use apps—use these tools to stay aware and intentional.

Why digital wellness matters

Spending too much time on screens or feeling tethered to devices can contribute to anxiety, sleep troubles, eye strain, and even social disconnection. On the flip side, balanced tech use can enhance productivity, foster meaningful connections, and support mental clarity

Practical tips for digital wellness

  1. Create intentional breaks: Try starting your day without your phone or taking short tech-free moments to breathe or stretch.
  2. Curate your digital environment: Follow content that uplifts and inspires, and mute or unfollow sources of stress or negativity.
  3. Set boundaries for notifications: Use tools to silence non-essential alerts, especially during rest or focused work time.
  4. Practice mindful tech use: Engage with your devices intentionally; ask if the time spent online aligns with your goals or well-being.
  5. Use focus and bedtime modes: Leverage features designed to minimize distractions and encourage better sleep habits.
  6. Swap screen time for outdoor time when you can- When possible, replace some phone or device time with walks, hikes, or moments in nature, these boosts your mental and physical well-being.
  7. Schedule regular digital detoxes: Whether a few hours or a whole day, unplug periodically to refresh your mind.

Digital Wellness is about consciously shaping your relationship with technology, so it supports your overall well-being and helps you feel balanced and energized.
