Health and Safety Moment: Summer Safety Tips
As we head into the second half of August, there's still plenty of summer fun opportunities left to be had. Keep safety in mind while enjoying time with family and friends.
Stay cool in the heat:
Stay cool and hydrated by limiting your sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Drink plenty of water, seek shade, and visit air-conditioned places when possible. Slow down your activities, apply sunscreen regularly, and wear light-colored clothing. Never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle, as temperatures can be extremely dangerous.
Avoid the bugs:
To avoid mosquitoes, steer clear of outdoor activities at dawn and dusk when they are most active. Ticks are commonly found along trails, especially in wooded areas and tall grass. Light-coloured clothing is less attractive to mosquitoes and allows you to see ticks more easily. Applying insect repellents that contain DEET as directed as it can help protect against bites.
Seek shelter during thunderstorms:
If you hear thunder, take cover immediately in a sturdy building and stay inside for at least 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder. If no solid shelter is available, a vehicle can offer protection.
Keep food safe:
Properly chilling food during the summer is essential for preventing foodborne illnesses. Promptly refrigerate leftovers, and discard anything that has been at room temperature for an extended period of time. Maintain your fridge at 4°C (40°F) or lower, and use an appliance thermometer to monitor the temperature.
Drive safely:
Always ensure your children are securely buckled up, even for short trips, and remember that the back seat is the safest place for them. Stay vigilant for children playing or riding bikes near roadways.
Connect with care:
Avoid sharing vacation plans on social media. Consider deleting posts from friends that mention your absence. Also, be cautious with geotagging; many smartphones and cameras automatically attach location data to photos.
Stay safe and have fun while you enjoy those final days of summer!
