Upcoming Funding Opportunities

Do you need IDEAWORKS’s assistance in preparing your funding application? Be sure to plan in advance! While we’re always available to answer any questions you may have, we have very limited internal capacity until May. In the meantime, we can connect you with external resources to support your writing.

SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. Partnership Engage Grants are valued at $7,000 to $25,000 for one year. If you have a project that you think would benefit from this funding, please contact Neil Wilkinson.

The Government of Canada has funding available through its Advancing Accessibility Standards Research program. Eligible organizations can apply for up to $250,000 per year per project (with a maximum of $750,000 over 3 years). It will fund accessibility standards research projects that focus on one or more of the following priority areas: accessibility in Indigenous communities; built environment with a focus on heritage buildings; communication, other than plain language; design and delivery of programs and services; information and communication technology; and procurement (buying) of goods, services and facilities. The deadline to apply is March 25, 2021. If you have a project that you think would benefit from this funding, please contact Neil Wilkinson.

NSERC Engage Grants provide up to $25,000 of funding for up to six months. Engage Grants are designed to give innovative companies that operate from a Canadian base access to the knowledge, expertise and capabilities available at Canadian colleges. These grants are intended to foster the development of new research partnerships by supporting short-term research and development projects aimed at addressing a company-specific problem. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Plan to apply for Engage funding at least 5-8 months in advance of the project start date. If you have a project that you think would benefit from this funding, please contact Neil Wilkinson.

The MITACS Business Strategy Internship Program is a new program that was initiated through a federal contribution spurred by COVID-19. For the BSI, MITACS will match $5,000 contributed by a company to provide a student with a $10,000 total stipend for a 4-6 month business-oriented project to help a partner adjust to COVID-19 circumstances and modern challenges. If you have a project that you think would benefit from this funding, please contact Neil Wilkinson.

MaRS has launched the Lung Cancer Innovation Challenge. Conceived in collaboration with Merck Canada, the Lung Cancer Innovation Challenge aims to identify, implement and scale solutions that can enhance a lung cancer patient’s journey by reducing the length of time between diagnosis and treatment, and enabling improved treatment outcomes. Designed for Ontario-based innovators (including researchers) creating novel solutions to improve the lung cancer patient journey, the competition features a $100,000 CAD grand prize, with a runner-up prize of $50,000 CAD. Submissions close on March 25, 2021.
