Introducing the School of Climate Action (Video)

At the Spring 2025 Open House, visitors and prospective students got their first look at the newly launched School of Climate Action.  

The school’s launch marks an important milestone in the college’s sustainability journey as a centre of excellence committed to educating the climate leaders, innovators and problem-solvers of tomorrow. The School of Climate Action will prioritize interdisciplinary academic programs, partnership development and applied research all in the efforts of continuing our climate leadership. 

For more than 15 years we’ve been building a culture of sustainability at the college. This core belief guides many of our actions and plans. 

In 2018, the Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation opened as Hamilton's first zero-carbon institutional building and one of the largest in Canada. It is more than just a building. It is also a living lab where students learn by doing and where climate solutions are put to the test. 

We lead national partnerships like the Canadian Colleges for Resilient Recovery, focused on reskilling and upskilling workers for the green economy. Through our Centre for Climate Change Management, we co-develop solutions with industry, government and local communities. Important partnerships that allow us to turn knowledge into action. 

The School of Climate Action has already established partnership with ECO Canada, and SOS UK, and will continue to build on this current and historical momentum creating a hub for dialogue and shared action. True climate leadership must extend beyond institutional walls and into the communities we serve.  

With the launch of the School of Climate Action, we are developing programs that combine critical analysis and real-world application. Our curriculum is interdisciplinary because the climate crisis does not respect boundaries, and neither should education. 

Our approach integrates Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being, including Two-Eyed Seeing and the Two Row Wampum teachings, and places a strong emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion. The programs within the school will reflect the complexity of the world our students are entering and empower them to lead within it.
