Justice Studies student places first at annual competition
Last month, students from Mohawk's Justice Studies programs took part in the annual PREP Competition hosted by Sheridan College.
The Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police, known as PREP, is a fitness test that police applicants must pass to demonstrate their ability to perform the physical demands of the job. The PREP Competition students recently participated in is invite-only. Mohawk College students began competing in 2015. The competition was paused during COVID, but returned this year.
Mohawk Justice Studies students participate in tryouts to join the team. Two male and two female students are ultimately chosen to represent the college. “This year's team was a well balanced group, they represented their programs very well and also our college,” says Professor Shelley Lang.
Congratulations to Police Foundations student, Jacob Russo who placed first in the competition!
All four of Mohawk's competitors also had personal bests:
- Addison Cann (Semester 1 Police Foundations)- 2:04 & 7
- Christina Hendriks (Semester 1 Advanced Police Studies)- 2:12 & 7
- Matthew Giannou (Semester 3 Protection, Security and Investigation)- 1:31 & 7
- Jacob Russo (Semester 3 Police Foundations)- 1:20 & 7
Professor Joanne Smith said, “These students worked very hard to get these results and we (Shelley and myself) along with the Justice department are very proud of this team.”
Police recruiters also attended the event, providing a great benefit for the student competitors to make connections with their potential future employers.
