Drew McTear, has been with Mohawk College for 11 years. As an Associate Dean for the past five years in the School of Business, he has led faculty over some very tricky terrain. To do this effectively has required a compassionate approach.

“Prior to joining the academic sector, I managed for twenty years in industry and learned early on the importance of empathy and style-flexing as vital leadership skills. In my experience, productivity and good decision-making thrive in an environment where individuals feel understood and whose strengths are encouraged.  But “empathy”, feeling what someone else is feeling, isn’t enough to foster that sort of environment. Jeff Wiener, Executive Director at LinkedIn articulates this perfectly when he speaks about “Compassionate Management”. He rightfully points out that compassion is a more objective form of empathy. It’s one thing to feel another’s challenge or discomfort; but compassion suggests that you are in a position to do something about it. Good leaders recognize and leverage this to create a positive workspace.”

Drew really enjoyed, and wanted to share, this quick 13-minute LinkedIn Learning interview with Silicon Valley’s Jeff Wiener on Compassionate Management.
