Massage Therapy Speed Networking Highlights

The idea for the recent Massage Therapy Speed Networking and Meet the Employer event began with a simple, recurring need: employers want opportunities to meet current Massage Therapy students.

Each year, students in semester 6 are given an assignment to prepare a professional resume and refine their networking skills as part of their Practice Management course. This year’s event, held on February 26, saw 18 employers from Niagara, London, Toronto and the Hamilton region connect with these students at the Fennell Campus. The range of organizations reflected a diversity of career paths including hotels and spas, national chains like Massage Addict, and multidisciplinary clinics such as chiropractic, sports rehab and postpartum care.

The networking event began with a 20-minute mingling session, allowing students and employers to introduce themselves. This was followed by one-on-one sessions where students had the opportunity to provide more information about their skills and experience, offering their best reason for being hired.

Chris Owen, Academic Coordinator, shared, “This event facilitates students to not only overcome their fears about the interview process, but helps them realize that they are going to be a valuable healthcare provider who is in demand. The variety of employers coming to the event gives choices to the soon to be Registered Massage Therapists, that they may not yet be aware of.”

The Speed Networking and Meet the Employer event not only bridges the gap between education and employment, but also ensures Mohawk College students enter the profession with confidence, connections, and opportunities waiting on the other side of graduation.
