McMaster, Mohawk to add 4,000-plus seats in high-demand fields

More than 4,000 new student seats in high-demand fields are expected to be added at Hamilton post-secondary institutions.

McMaster University is set to receive $90 million to create 2,769 seats, while Mohawk College on the Mountain will receive about 1,400.

For Mohawk, whose submission was for a number of health and skilled-trades programs, it’s a “significant vote of confidence” in the college’s strategy, including its partnerships that aim to “respond to critical workforce needs,” spokesperson Sean Coffey said in an email.

The funding will help the college respond to current and emerging workforce demands by “aligning and expanding” programs in areas where skills are most needed, Mohawk president Paul Armstrong said on Thursday.

“For students, that means more opportunities to pursue an education that leads to rewarding, in-demand careers,” he said. “For employers and our communities, it means a stronger pipeline of skilled, job-ready graduates.”
