Mohawk club is online and Hack-tive

Though on-campus activities have been suspended this semester, some Mohawk students have kept clubs alive and well. And, in at least one case, inter-college competition has been part of the experience.

Eight members of the Mohawk Cyber Club recently participated in CyberSci, a national Cyber Security Challenge.

Competing as two teams of four, Team Mohack #1 and Team Mohack #2, the club members competed in hacking exercises against 38 other teams from across the country. The event consisted of hacking exercises in a jeopardy-style Capture The Flag (CTF) format.

“Our teams worked through challenges, involving web exploitation, mobile application forensics, log analysis, scripting challenges, reverse engineering and more,” explained team member Trevor Robertson. “We would receive a challenge, log into a Cybersci VPN with our own virtual machines and begin interacting with the intended attack victim for vulnerabilities to exploit. Once we solved the challenge we would share the proof of completion, called the flag, and then explain how we got the answer to the judges.”

The event is supported by corporate sponsors and offers students the ability to network with employers looking for cyber security talent. Part of the registration for the event involved students submitting their resumes.

In the end, Team Mohack #1 finished in a 17-team tie for 12th place. Team Mohack #2 ended in a seven-way tie for 32nd place.

There is another Capture the Flag event coming up in February and the club is still accepting new members to join in.
