Mohawk College celebrates 50 years of Co-operative Education

Mohawk College celebrated the 50th anniversary of its co-operative education program today.

Mohawk was one of the first colleges in Canada to offer co-operative education, in 1969. Today, Mohawk offers co-operative education in 25 different programs.

“At Mohawk, we work to ensure our students are job-ready when they leave us –trained through real-life experience in order to excel in the workplace. We have been dedicated to that goal from our earliest days,” said Mohawk College President Ron McKerlie. “We are grateful to all those businesses and organizations that have contributed to the success of our students and co-op programs at Mohawk.”

Coinciding with National Co-op Week 2019, Mohawk hosted a ceremony to recognize employers who have contributed to the success of this program. This year, more than 1,900 employers posted co-op positions for nearly 3200 work-term opportunities.

“There are many ways we could quantify the success of Mohawk College’s Co-operative programs; one of them is interest and engagement of local employers,” said Vice President Academic Paul Armstrong.

During the ceremony, a recent Mohawk graduate of the Practical Nursing program, Natasha Mando, was also recognized for recently being named the 2018 Canadian Student of the Year in the Work-Integrated Learning category by Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada.
