Mohawk College student wins provincial and national Co-op Student of the Year Awards
This is the second consecutive year a Mohawk student has won both awards.
Mohawk College Insurance student Adam Longboat is the recipient of the 2022 Experiential and Work Integrated Learning Ontario Co-op Student of the Year Award for the College category, and the 2022 CEWIL Canada – Student of the Year Award. This is the second time in as many years that a Mohawk College has won both the provincial and national awards.
Adam is a fourth-semester student in Mohawk College's Insurance program. During his co-op term at Swiss Reinsurance, Adam made his mark on the entire Canadian team at Swiss Reinsurance.
Adam's personal story is a rich tapestry that many students can identify with. As a proud Indigenous man, Adam shared his passion with the entire Swiss Re Canadian team leading a successful week-long series of events to observe Truth and Reconciliation.
A mature student, Adam came to Mohawk to make a career change. He has previously worked as a welder, but was forced to give it following an industrial accident.
A devoted father of two, Adam demonstrated resilience and priority-setting when balancing work and family priorities throughout his studies and work term. He was selected by his professors to represent students on the Insurance Program Advisory Committee because of his scholastic performance, contributions in the classroom, and the respect earned from his peers.
His supervisors, colleagues, peers, and the college are proud of Adam's accomplishments in his co-op journey.
Adam will receive $1,500 as part of the CEWIL Award and a $500 award as part of the provincial award. The award will be presented to him at Mohawk College this month as part of National Co-op Month, and Adam will be recognized on CEWIL Canada’s website and social media.
