Mountaineers varsity highlights – February 1, 2024
Regular season action is beginning to wind down for the Mohawk Mountaineers winter sports teams as attention will turn to playoffs in the coming weeks.
This past week had positive results for the Mountaineers with a total of four wins out of five games.
It started with a 30-point victory for men’s basketball versus the Canadore Panthers. Mohawk had five players finish in double digit scoring.
Women’s volleyball won both their matches, defeating the Sheridan Bruins 3-0 and the Niagara Knights 3-1.
Men’s volleyball split their matches with a 3-2 victory over the Bruins and then a 3-0 loss to the Knights.
Athletes of the Week
Harpreet Gill (Brampton, ON)
Gill was a helping hand in the Mountaineers men's basketball team getting back in the win column this past week with two victories. In an 83-80 win versus the Niagara Knights, Gill had his first career double-double with 13 points on six-of-nine shooting and 14 rebounds. He also scored the winning basket in that contest. The third-year forward, who has earned a starting role this season, also scored 18 points on eight-of-10 shooting with nine rebounds in a 30-point win versus the Canadore Panthers. Gill is currently second in the OCAA this season with a 67.9 field goal percentage.
Alex Jurak (St. Catharines, ON)
Jurak has earned Mountaineers Athlete of the Week for the second time this year. In two matches and a combined eight sets played this past week, Jurak had 27 kills and two service aces. The performance that stood out was Mohawk men's volleyballs five set win over the Sheridan Bruins, where Jurak had a career-best 21 kills on a 48.5 kill percentage.
Upcoming Game Schedule:
· Feb. 2 – Mohawk basketball will head to Kitchener, ON to play the Conestoga Condors with the women’s game tipping off at 6 p.m. and the men will follow at 8 p.m.
· Feb. 7 – Road action continues for the basketball teams as they play the Humber Hawks. The women will play at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m.
· Feb. 3 – The Mountaineers volleyball teams will closeout their regular season at home when they host the Humber Hawks. The women’s match is set for 1 p.m. and the men will play at 3 p.m.
· Feb. 7-10 – Mohawk curling heads to Sault Ste. Marie for the OCAA Championships.
