Mountaineers varsity highlights – October 20

20220923_MXCountry_7

It was the busiest week of the year for the Mohawk Mountaineers with seven teams in action and a combined 13 games.

The week was highlighted by a 1-0 victory for women’s soccer to conclude their 2022 regular season schedule. The win ensured the Mountaineers ended their season undefeated (5-0-5). It’s the first time since 1998 a Mohawk women’s soccer team has gone a whole season without a loss.

This upcoming Saturday, the Mountaineers will host an OCAA crossover playoff game at 3 p.m. and it will be played at St. John Henry Newman Catholic Secondary in Stoney Creek.

On top of the success from women’s soccer, the Mountaineers cross country accomplished a double-podium finish this past week at the Centennial Invitational. It was the third consecutive race of 2022 the women’s team had finished third place, and the men, who placed sixth and fourth in their first two races this year, were successful for a bronze medal finish as well.

Both men’s soccer and women’s softball saw their seasons come to an end following losses to the Fanshawe Falcons.

Exhibition play wrapped up for the indoor sports teams this past weekend. Men’s basketball participated in a mini-tournament at Sheridan College where they won two of three, defeating the Centennial Colts and St. Lawrence Surge and losing to the George Brown Huskies.

Regular season play begins this Saturday for men’s basketball as they will host their home opener at 8 p.m. with the visiting Canadore Panthers in town.

Mountaineers women’s and men’s volleyball hosted a mini-exhibition tournament themselves. The women played three tough teams, including two universities, losing all of their matches. The men came away with three wins to conclude preseason action.

Mountaineers Athletes of the Week (in partnership with the Mohawk Students’ Association)

Paige Epp (women’s soccer)

Matias Tessel (cross country)

Not only was Epp (Grimsby, ON) named Mountaineers Athlete of the Week, the fourth-year midfielder was honoured provincially and nationally as both the OCAA Star of the Week and CCAA Athlete of the Week.

The NCAA Division I transfer was a visible leader and star for women’s soccer over their final two games. Epp had five shots, three of which were dangerous attempts on net, in a 1-0 win over the Sheridan Bruins. She would score her first-ever OCAA goal in a 1-0 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons.

Tessel (Guelph, ON) continues to lead the men’s cross country team and this past week his leadership led to a team bronze medal finish. The second-year runner finished 11th overall individually, his second straight race with an 11th place finish.
